finally getting around to my "intro"
 

My name is Sue and I joined a while back specifically so I could have a look at a friend's amazing machine find. Since then I haven't been on much at all.

I grew up in a family of sewers - grandma quilted by hand, queen-full-twin size quilts of amazing quality. Her sisters also sewed, including the one that lived with me at the end of her life. Those sisters sewed practically anything. I learned to sew at home from grandma and then in high school in home ec. I'm closing in on 49, the tail end of the Boomers. Didn't start sewing again for real until after my great aunt died and left me her beloved Bernina 1130.

With that and a bit of inheritance, I have become quite the fabricaholic...like to sew all kinds of things, mostly totes/small quilts/crafts and certain pieces of clothing.

I'm on today because I need some advice on my Rowenta focus. Seems today it felt like spewing it's water out the bottom edges and I have no idea why. It was given to me brand new 1.5 yrs ago....so you can see why I hate to just run out and replace it.

Sorry I can't help you with the Rowenta, but wanted to welcome you to the board. I just purchased a Brother 420 and am sure that my stash will grow as I now think my sewing will improve.

I don't really know anything about Rowenta irons but did have another brand act basically the same. I threw it out, then bought myself an inexpensive Black & Decker. So far, it's lasted longer than the more expensive iron (which, for the life of me, I can't remember what brand it was! Sorry!).

My Rowenta did the same thing on and off for about a year and the died completely.

Thanks everyone. I spent a fair bit of time yesterday reading old threads here on irons - oh my I did not realize the issue with irons until you all opened my eyes.

Now it makes perfect sense why my wonderful great aunt ALWAYS insisted on emptying out the water reservoir after she was finished with ironing. I thought she was silly but it turns out that her wonderful, extra-long cord, no auto-off Braun lasted over 15 yrs! I even got a few years out of it after she passed.

Ok, on to research and/or post my next quilting question:)

Hello and welcome from New York. I have had the same problem with my Rowenta traveling iron. I just bought my 4th one. I have yet to find a travel iron that is this size and steams beautifully. All the others have leaked exactly the same. You would think that the company would invest in finding a solution to this.

On this note I do have to say that when I add water to a cold iron it spills out the sides more than when I heat the iron first and add water, never to the fill line, just below it.

Hi from Ohio! This is only a guess, did you put too much water in it? I have a Rowenta and it leaked so I don't put as much water in it and I haven't had a problem since.

Welcome. I want you to know that if you search here on the board you'll find more negative experiences on the Rowena iron that good ones. I think last week one lady was ironing and it literly caught fire right in her hands and burnt her. The spewing of water is a common thing with it so the fact that you got 1.5yrs I guess makes you very lucky.

I had a high end Shark that did the same thing and finally just wouldn't turn on...It went by-by. I got a new B&D "classic" iron at a thrift shop for $14.99 and it works great.
