I am pretty new to quilting. All self taught. So there is sooo much that I don't know! That is why I joined this forum. There has to be a easier way (than pinning and adhesive) to put the layers together!! How about some type of frame? If so, are they easy to use? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Seems to me that if you had the room for a frame, it would work nicely. Our Grandmothers had some that were pulled up to the ceiling when not needed. You first put on the backing, out side down, then the batting or whatever you want in the middle, pin or lock these both down someway, then put on the top and pin that down. Then you pull and even it up, and do NOT cut any edges till it is all quilted. It's rolled up as it is sewed, some have it rolled until it is quilted. I think it depends on how many work on it at once. The church where we've seen quilts in progress have it out flat and tight, with each side being rolled as they progress from one side to the other. I presume that they sew from left to right, but possibly right to left.
You could probably find patterns for a quilt frame on the Internet or even buy one at an Estate sale somewhere. Or advertise for one locally. Or go to any Senior Citizens' group and ask if they know of any and how it works. You have a lot of stored information in those older heads. They might just know where one is and be glad to find someone willing and eager to treasure it. |
I use a lap quilt even on my king size quilts. That way several cats and maybe a dog or two can start using them early- lol. It does let me move around from room to room and even on the porch on nice days! I have spray basted with good luck. I just bought pinmoors and have been loving them when I need to pin something.

Thank you for the information.

I finally decided to buy a frame this year. I love it. Does take some room though.

Welcome. I haven't tried a frame. Do the big floor frames really make hand quilting easier than doing it with a hoop? Or... is it so one doesn't have to baste?

Welcome to the board. I have never quilted any bed size quilts until this year. I now have one queen size under my belt. I usually get someone to do it for me. I quilt small items like table runners. pillow covers, Bible covers and baby or lap quilts by hand or on mahine.

Welcome from NC...I have a wooden floor frame that is small and can sit in front of my chair so I can watch tv and then another large frame that stays in the garage for when I have friends over to quilt with me. When using the small frame, I still baste the quilt heavily...but when using the large frame, I just make my sandwich and get to work.
Lap frames make it alot easier to manage the quilting process when doing larger items..and I have various shapes and sizes of them from different sized projects. I have found that if I don't use some type of frame, my quilt seems to come out lumpy or my stitches aren't uniform or even close to pretty. |
