Hello from Budapest!

Hi Everyone!

I'm an American ex-pat living in Budapest (for now!). I have finished three quilts and am excited to start #4. Budapest doesn't seem to have much of a quilting-scene, so I am looking forward to reading about your experiences, advice, and hopefully learn a few tricks!

Until now my projects have been with second-hand materials and hand-quilting. I promised myself I wouldn't invest a lot of money in quilting until I could prove that I would keep it up. For my new project I am getting my first cutting mat and rotary cutter-- which I think will make me love it EVEN MORE!

Thanks!
Em

Hi Em, my name is Marilyn and I'm from Nebraska. I just joined QB so I have a lot to learn yet. I love quilting and of course other crafts. You mentioned used fabrics I always have good intentions not spending on new fabric but for some reason when I get to the city there is a big magnet that draws me to new fabric, I have been good for a long time so I'm overdue for my addiction of fabric. :) I broke my pelvis last Sept. and wasn't able to drive so I was just getting ready to presume my old lifestyle and I rebroke it about a month ago. It will be a long, long time now. Lucky I do have fabrics on hand. Welcome and we will learn together. You have a blessed week and see you on the boards. Marilyn

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

Thanks for the hints on cutting up shirts! I have to say, I am in love with my first rotary cutter. OLFA was the only brand I could find here. I was a little disappointed because the blade that came in the package (pre-fitted) was AWFUL and DULL. I had to buy a separate one just to cut through cotton. :(

I haven't found many resources here for nice fabrics. There is one shop that sells some nice things, but the prices are laughable. $4 for something out of the scrap pile! I tried to purchase some solid fabric (I'd been using bedsheets, but thought I would try something more colorful) and they wouldn't sell me less than a full meter. I asked for 1.5 meters and they said 1 or 2, nothing in between-- and nothing less than 1! I'll have to start buying my fabric online!!

Thanks again, so glad to see so many helpful quilters!
Feel better, Marilyn!

welcome to the board! your dog is beautiful!

when it comes to buying online - I'm an expert. I'm from Germany and we have quite a few online shops which sell and ship to other european counties. they are more expensive than online shops stateside but still ... you can get good deals (especially in the sales section). I also know a few online shops stateside which sell and ship to Europe. PM me if you want my list!
