I'm Calistria and love making quilts. However I find quilting my own is scary. I am making a simple baby quilt now and this is the first quilt I am quilting myself. I took the easy way out and decided to do quilt in the ditch but would like to do something pretty on the borders. I am not really sure about stenciling or freehand quilting. Any suggestions?

Use your creativity and intuition. There are no rules in quilting. Welcome from Colorado.

I have not tried free motion quilting yet. I traced a leaf pattern onto old "copy" paper, pinned the sheets to the quilt border & stitched with my walking foot.

The first time I FMQ was on my daughters memory quilt. I made a heart template and used a disappearing marking pen and quilted hearts on it. Since then I have discovered continuous line stencils and the pounce pad.

I just need to quit procrastinating and fretting about quilting and start practicing on some small pillow size projects!

Hi and welcome from Southern California! This is a great place, as you probably already have noticed, to get great advice and inspiration on anything to do with quilting. Everyone starts with their first quilt and you will gain confidence and skill with each subsequent quilt. As is often stated on this blog, "there are no quilt police here" so go for it and be brave!

Welccome from Texas. I'm fairly new to quilting and haven't tried FMQ. I enjoy hand quilting. I traced a stencil onto my border and then hand quilted. It turned out really pretty. You will love it here.
