By all means do your own color choice.
Make a list of the (fabrics), just as they suggest. Then... next to each fabric selection make a note (and maybe even put a sample) of the fabric you have decided to use.

Welcome to the quilting board!! You will find loads of ideas, inspiration and some friends along the way!! As others have suggested, make your quilt in colours you like. I usually snip tiny bits of the fabric and tape them beside the cutting instructions so I don't get confused. Also, just make sure you substitute dark for dark and light for light if you like the pattern the class is using. That way, the pattern will show up the way it is designed to. (did that make any sense at all??) Good luck and welcome!

AAhhh...that does make sense. The pattern is very neat (actually, it's "Cottage Rose" pattern for the Joann's class Quilting 202 that starts next Monday night.) I think I may be in over my head!

Welcome from NJ. Quilting is all about what makes you happy. Do it your own way is what i say.
