I'm new to this forum although I have read a lot of the columns.

I've quilted before, but just E. Burns Log Cabin and Trip Around the World. I have never quilted the tops of the quilts (guess I'm chicken). I usually have made them into comforters.

Just a question since I have been out of the loop for at least 10 years. What is a "scrappy" quilt???

I am a retired Funeral Director and enjoying retirement with my 3 year old grandson.

Hope to hear from someone. Lizzy-tish

Hello from England . I am sure you will enjoy being part of this quilting board.
A scrappy quilt is just as it says a quilt made out of left overs, or of course it can be made from any material in your stash. We love them and enjoy seeing photos of them, we are all looking for new ideas.

Hi Lizzy. I have trouble finishing my tops into quilts too. But if you stick around here long enough and ask enough questions, you will get all the encouragement and support you need to quilt those tops!! Would love to see your work

Welcome, Lizzy-tish, from St. Louis! Isn't retirement great!
Scrappy quilts are not necessarily planned color coordinated quilts, although they can be! They are not ART quilts. It is a way to use up left overs from previous quilts, or when you are lucky enough to find a bunch of material at a yard or garage sale and there is not enough to do a big quilt in a certain color theme, you use almost matches or a nine patch with darks and lights and then slice them again and go from there. It is a fun way to sew. String quilts are examples of scrappies. It is hard to do a scrappy when you are first quilting, but if you are like the rest of us, you will have left overs from every other quilt. You just can't bear to discard anything, in the the true pioneer spirit, everything MUST be used!

Welcome Lizzy-tish from Southern California. I love "scrappy" looking quilts cause I love to put lots of different fabrics into a quilt. I have not made a true "scrap" quilt, but many of the quilts I have made have had anywhere from 15 to 120 different fabrics in them.

By 'encouragement and support' I think Marcia means 'folks nagging you for pics'

Seriously though, welcome, it's fabulous here, so friendly and supportive, and not only for quilting issues!

Hi and welcome from aother Mass.

Lizzy-tish 02-16-2009 04:59 AM

Thank you all for your welcome! I must admit that I am really not "into" these computer forums. My daughters try to introduce me to facebook, etc. I tell them I can't spend the day on the comp. when that 3 year old is "everywhere". (I have him daily when his Mom is teaching). So making another quilt is a challenge from making them 20+ years ago!
"Quilt4u", we are not far from each other. I grew up in Chelsea.

Welcome from Linton Indiana

Lizzy-tish 02-21-2009 01:37 PM

I'm from Lynnfield. It's about 15 miles north of Boston. Where are you on the Cape. My cousin retired to Hyannis. Can't you tell I'm New England. It's "the cape"!!

I just dropped into this forum after receiving the e-mails for about 2-3 years. Thought that since I was going to make another quilt I should try to "remember" how to do it. It's been a long time since I sat at the sewing machine.

The picture attached to your note is beautiful!!

I just sent you a long PM. I don't think it went thru and now I can't get it back. Let me know if you got it....if not I'll rewrite it.
