I hand quilt with an old fashioned frame on long boards and wooden horses! I quilt with ladies at church where we have lots of room for this old frame.
At home, I hand quilt without a large frame. I have actually pin basted and used the small Q-Snap frame on my lap. I have started using spray basting and quilting without a frame. I have the large Q-Snap frame and used it until I ran out of room for it! (Note to self-Must stop collecting fabric.)

I have a longarm so I can't recommend a frame for you. I know the PVC tends to lose its holding ability. Been there done that.
