I am originally from southwest Louisiana but now live in Mobile, AL. I have so many memories of Momma and her friends gathering to quilt. The quilting frame was four pieces of 1x4 slats held together with C clamps that was hung from the ceiling by hooks screwed into the ceiling. As Momma aged, she would call on me to come "put up her quilt" and from time-to-time I would quilt with her. Every quilt she ever made was cut out with a pattern that she drew or copied onto brown paper bag and cut with scissors. She never machine pieced or stitched. About 15 years ago, I thought that I would try my hand at quilting. I made a few hand-made quilts but I didn't acheive the results that I wanted. So I started using a rotary cutter and pieced by machine. I only hand quilt. My technique has improved some 30 quilts later, but still am not very good at colors. If I want to make a very special quilt, I usually have to have help with the colors.
I just made a dozen Preemie Blankets for the NICU at Women & Childrens Hospital for my son and daughter-in-law to take for Christmas. My little granddaughter spent her first Christmas in the NICU in 2006. This was a way for the kids to return the favor that someone did for them. They were super easy to make. I love doing projects that can be completed quickly rather than those that take a lot of tedious work. I'm looking forward to meeting others on this board and taking advantage of advice and inspiration from others. Margaret |
