Hello all you quilters out there! I am a newbie to quilting and I am working on a quilt for my husband, who is very tall. Is it ok to add a few extra borders on the ends to extend the length, then put a final border all the way around? Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome from the sunny state of Florida!!
There's no quilt police on this board so you can do anything you want to! What kind of quilt are you making? Would it be easier to just add an extra row of blocks(if you're making blocks) instead of extra borders? Could you post a picture then more would be able to help you!

Welcome!

I am making a quilt with fabric that my husband brought back from Africa. I also got some coordinating fabrics at a local quilt shop,so I have some of that left over for borders. I have most of the middle done, so was hoping to just add the borders, if it would look ok. I will try to post a picture, but I'm not too great at that.

Welcome to the board from Southern California!
You may add extra borders whenever you want!!
I do like the idea of an extra row of your blocks first though. As stated above, there are no quilt police here. Feel free to post a picture and ask questions and opinions.

Now I'm in Fiji-to answer your question, How about putting a pillow fold at the top-it will add length without making the quilt look lopsided or off-balance. It will add approx 1 1/2 to 2 feet (depending how wide you want). I don't know what it looks like, but if you have a basic background fabric in a neutral color, add the pillow fold extension at the top of the length and maybe a themed applique of African symbols or a couple of animals stretched across where they are positioned right over where the pillows would lay. I posted a quilt I made in blue on a white background that I did it on, plus a red/white/blue quilt with 2 American eagles on the pillow fold. Just an idea---

I am from near Toledo. We have a great quilting shop near me that has been so helpful in teaching me how to quilt. Since I'm newly retired, this is one of my new hobbies!

Thanks to all of you for your great suggestions! You've got me thinking! I may have to draw up different ways to extend the length, and see which one I like the best!

Hello and welcome from Boston, Ma. As far as the quilt goes you can do whatever you like but I would lay everything out first and see how you like it before you sew. I would also think of adding more blocks if you are doing blocks or something other than extended top and bottom borders.

Hello and welcome from a fellow Ohioan. This is a great group of people who will be happy to help and answer all your quilting questions. There are no "quilt police" here, so if you want to add extra boarders it's totally your call. Good luck and can't wait to see pictures of your finished work. We are a group of people who love to admire other peoples work.
