Hello and welcome from Washington state. You may find an older Singer--like a 301A may suit your needs. :)

Welcome -- I too would select an older machine for the really heavy duty work. One that I have that folks don't mention is the Elna Supra -- mine has even sewn through cardboard mending DD's book bag. I got the machine new in 1972 so it does qualify as a vintage machine, but it is a real work horse.
