my mom useto go to thrift stores, garage sales,or boot sales when we were over sea. look for clothes made out of cotton that you like the patern of.Her favorite Item to buy was skirts with the buttons down the front lots of yardage and can salvage buttons.I like shirts with pritty buttons they usualy come in a solid and you can't do anything without them! Don't forget to salvage lace for crazy Quilts!

I agree with your sentiments about the lack of quilting shops here in the UK. I've been quilting for a little over 18 months and get my supplies online, if you would like me to pass on the sites that I have found reliable I am happy to do so, though I'm afraid the only time you'll save any money is in their sales.

Quite often I buy on-line from the States - even with the postage it can still work out much cheaper. If you're looking for UK quilt shops - buy one or two of the magazines - they're full of adverts and links. PM me if you want any more details.
