So, if anyone out there could suggest a good basic quilting book and basic quilters tools that would help me get started it would be much appreciated! I would also like to take a class, but the classes seem to focus on making a specific quilt whereas I would like basic instruction on techniques, types of quilts, tools, etc. Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions, tips.
Happy quilting,
Leslie

The easiest beginner quilt book I found, when I started out, was Eleanors Burn's 'Irish Chain Quilts'. She was a teacher for years, so it is natural for her to instruct and educate. I'm sure there are others, I just wanted to share the one that helped me most. Good luck, and post pictures, so we can be helpful and encouraging.

Welcome from Spokane, Wa! I would suggest a beginner class that does a lap size sampler! You learn the basics of using a rotary cutter and mat, seam allowances, how to square up blocks, add borders, binding, etc. They usually only go a few weeks but you really learn the basics. I sewed clothes for years and learned a LOT in my beginner class for quilting. Then gift that quilt to someone special and make sure you put a label on it! DH got mine and he loves it!

Eleanor Burns is great for beginners. She goes through each step with up close photos. I started with her books.
Extremely easy step by step instructions.

Hi Leslie & welcome from NE PA. I am also a beginner & purchased "THE BETTER HOMES & GARDENS (Complete Guide to) QUILTING" book ($19.95). Believe me, it is the "bible" of quilting. I checked out amazon but was able to purchase it on ebay (new!) for less than $10.00 s/h included. I would wait before going out to buy any "tools" Is there a local quilt shop, quilting group nearby your home ? That would be great because they would be more than helpful to get you started. As far as patterns many are available on line. The snuggle-up, 4 patch, 9 patch is very easy. Good Luck and hope this info is helpful.
