So, if anyone out there could suggest a good basic quilting book and basic quilters tools that would help me get started it would be much appreciated! I would also like to take a class, but the classes seem to focus on making a specific quilt whereas I would like basic instruction on techniques, types of quilts, tools, etc. Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions, tips.

Welcome from Spokane, Wa! I would suggest a beginner class that does a lap size sampler! You learn the basics of using a rotary cutter and mat, seam allowances, how to square up blocks, add borders, binding, etc. They usually only go a few weeks but you really learn the basics. I sewed clothes for years and learned a LOT in my beginner class for quilting. Then gift that quilt to someone special and make sure you put a label on it! DH got mine and he loves it!
