Hello from Wisconsin!
Hi everyone! New here-I found out about this forum via Pinterest. I had researched a snowman quilt to make for my mom this Christmas and found people talking about the pattern on this forum, so I thought I'd join.
I'm 35 with a husband, preschooler, and a house full of pets. I've knitted and done no-sew projects, but I've never made a quilt before. Looking forward to doing it this holiday season and over the long winter here. Can't wait to learn more! I don't have a sewing machine yet, so I guess that should be an investment I make early on, huh? ;) |

Welcome from Tennessee and a former Wisconsinite. A sewing machine would be handy but you could piece by hand if you preferred

Welcome from Oklahoma. Have fun doing your research on a machine.

Hi and Welcome from North Carolina! You've come to the right place for all kinds of quilting answers to questions.
Yes, a sewing machine will be most helpful. To start, I have found that one does not need a fancy (expensive) electronic machine. I had one of those fancy ones, and went back to a very inexpensive mechanical heavy duty Singer from Walmart. It does everything I need for it to do. Until you become familiar with quilting, I would suggest that you start this way. Later, if you find that you need an electronic one, you can use the mechanical as a backup or a travel machine. IMHO. Enjoy your quilting!! It's a great hobby!! |
Welcome to the board! You can find a sewing machine in any price range. You could do it all by hand but it's a lot easier if you have a machine.

Hello and welcome! :) Perhaps even a vintage machine might interest you. You can learn to service them yourself, and they sew a great straight stitch. All-metal, or close to it. :)

Waving hello from Maryland. Happy quilting!

Hi - welcome from Minnesota! Check out CraigsList for sewing machines or WalMart online which has refurbished ones for less than $75. A friend in Green Bay got one of the refurbished ones from WalMart for only $45 and it's still going strong two years later. All you really need is one that does basic stitching and you'll be fine.

Welcome from England!
I mainly quilt by hand but have just purchased my dream sewing machine. I am saying that simply because my cheap Singer really did do everything I needed it to do for 30 years and it wasn't working properly. Honestly the super easy needle threader on my new machine is one of my most needed bits..... ;) |
