Welcome!

Are you talking about applique (sewing pieces of fabric together so they look like a butterfly, and then sewing the whole thing onto a shirt)
or
embroidery (having a machine stitch the entire butterfly for you, either directly on a pair of jeans or a separate piece of fabric)?

Welcome to the board from MO. It sounds like you want embroidered appliques that you can sew on to dresses, etc..

If you have a emb machine, like the Janome 300 or 350, you can create your own appliques. You can get a 300 for much less than a $1,000, if you look around.

Welcome from Western Australia! Most machines will have zig zag and other stitches for applique - doesn't have to be real fancy and doesn't have to be real expensive. Have a look around, and try out a few demo models to find one that you are comfortable with. You could also try looking at second hand machines, if they are in good condition you can get some real bargains. Make sure you try them out though.
