Hi
I have a stupid question about scissors and I'm sure that you folks would have the answer. I'm new here and I hope that I'm in the right aera for this question. I do not sew or quilt, but I'm in love with someone who does. My wife is away and I would like to get her a nice pair of scissors as a surprise when she comes home. I would like to know the difference between quilters scissors and dressmakers scissors. I don't have a clue. Are the quilters sharper? Is their something different about them. I can't tell from the pictures. I was looking at Mundial Professional Quilters #1850 and Mundial dressmakers shears #1860. Both are 8 1/2" and are the same price. But whats the difference? Is that a good brand? Should I be looking at others? She uses a dinky pair of scissors that are made in China. She deserves better. I would appreciate any ideas that you folks have. And I thank you for your suggestions. Walt |
First off, that's not a stupid question - I'd like to know myself - and I'm sorry I don't know, but I did want to say what a great husband you are to do this for her!

Hi Walt!
I haven't heard of Mundial scissors, but I googled them, and they look like they would be OK - especially if she is using dinky scissors right now! The difference between the Quilters & Dressmakers shears seems to be that the Quilters have a "knife" edge to cut thru heavier fabrics, while the Dressmakers have a "micro-serrated" edge to cut thru' different kinds of fabric. I don't know that one is an especially better edge than the other, probably choosing by color would be fine! lol Personally, my favorite scissors are Ginghers, but they are pricey, and I really do most of my cutting for quilting with an Olfa 45mm rotary cutter. Good luck! Which ever you pick, I bet she'll love them! :D |
Walt
I will only use Mundial scissors. My grandfather had an upholstery business for many years and he always said that the Mundial scissors can be sharpened over and over without problems, unlike many of the other brands out there. Don't know if this is true or not...but I have had my Mundial scissors for almost 3 yrs and use them daily and they still don't need sharpened. Sorry, don't know about the difference as to Quilters vs. Dressmakers. Hope this helps a little |
Hi Wally,
I've used Fiskars for years with out problems. I've known quilters that like the Ginghers & haven't heard of the Mundial but sounds like they would be ok too according to jabs317. I use my rotary cutter & matt more than my scissors just like zyxquilts. I'm sure she'll be happy with whatever you end up choosing. New scissors are always a treat!! :D |
I use my Fiskars for my quilting and dressmaking... As long as they are sharp, it works for me. I've had my Fiskars for over 9 yrs and they still cut good. Whatever you decide, I know she'll love them

I have a few pairs of Fiskars around, too. One of them came with a sharpener, which was something I never knew I needed til I got one. I have an ancient set of Ginghers which cut well, but do not fit my small pudgy hands as well.

Wow what good information.
Thank you folks so much. Now I will proceed to go crazy deciding between your favorites. I hadn't heard of Kai or Ginghers before. They look good also. When I was a kid my mother used a pair of Wiss scissors and a Singer sewing machine. I know that I'm going to buy more than one pair. Maybe a thread snipper also. (I never knew what they were before) I think that if you buy quality items, it is cheaper in the long run. Thanks again. Walt |
Here is another thought.
She has a small plastic box that she keeps her sewing "stuff" in. I was thinking of a sewing basket of some kind. Are their companies that specialise in sewing baskets? Somthing on the small to medium side? Am I driving you all crazy with these questions? I owe you all a Pizza. Walt |
Walt I think that it is really sweet that you want to suprise your wife. Like the others I mainly just use a rotary cutter and cutting matt for my quilting. For the sewing baskets I noticed that Walmart had some really cute sewing baskets the other day. Another place to check would be Joann's if you have one close by.
|
I've seen them at Joanne's too. I never found one big enough to hold all my "stuff".
|
Hancock Fabrics has a really nice assortment of sewing boxes and sewing "totes" that have rollers on them. Another great option if she has to move her "equipment" a lot.
I'd suggest the quilting scissors over the dressmaker ones. If you are on a spending roll, a gift card to a fabric store would also be an awesome gift. We NEVER have too much fabric, and I, for one, get the "guilts" when I buy fabric that I haven't planned the "need" for yet. You are a great man, Walt. |
First, I just want to say that is so sweet of you and she'll be so thankful for new scissors. I personally don't use scissors that often. most of the time I use my rotary cutter and mat. I do have Fiskars scissors that I love that are spring loaded and they cut through plenty of layers very precisely. I also have just a pair of cheap scissors to snip threads.

I bought my daughter and daughter in law Ginghers and they had a larger scissors and a small scissors in the box. I got them at Joann Fabrics and used the 40% off coupon that is in the flyer. They have lots of flyers and are usually very helpful at selecting things. I received my Ginghers 20 years ago for a gift and still love them. Sewing basket can be found at almost any fabric store. Happy shopping.

I have lots of 'stuff' for my quilting. So....my hubby got me a big fishing tackle box, with all the smaller boxes and dividers. Great for keeping things where they belong, and easy to take to retreats. And I'm sure the bonus was that if I got tired of it, he'd take it. Hasn't happened yet!
|
Thats a great idea.
Fishing tackle boxes come in all sizes and shapes. I'm going to take a look in a large hunting and fishing store in our area. Ray's Sport shop. Better yet I'll wait and let her choose one when she returns. Thanks for that idea also. Walt |
Hubby took me to Sportsman's Warehouse, and said, "find what you want". It kept me busy while he did his normal thing there, and he takes longer to shop than I do! We now have a Cabela's close by, so I'm sure he'll find some other use for me for something designed for hunting or fishing.

Hi from Mass. I use Ginghers.
|
I use Fiskars, the ones with the spring in it. They help me tremendously, cutting with a regular pair of scissors I can only cut about 5 minutes before my wrist starts bothering me. So I have several of the Fiskars and occasionally get them sharpened. Unfortunately, Fiskars redesigned them and I don't like the "new, improved" style.
