I'm completely new to quilting. I've never even sewn anything with a machine before but have someone that will show me how to use it. I've always loved quilts and would like to try to get into making them for me, my kids, my family. They are the type of things that get handed down and i like that idea. Anyway I have a Brother VX1120 will I be able to quilt with this machine? I have The Complete Idiots Guide to Quilting coming in the mail any other suggestions for good quilting books?

Books?? All of them. Just kidding, sort of. Some of my first books were by Eleanor Burns. She has very simple, easy to follow instructions to make complicated looking quilts. I think you can quilt with about any machine that will sew a straight line, I'm not familiar with that one though. Soon you will be addicted and need the following items: A back up machine in case something happens to the one you're using. A supply of notions that include a rotary cutter, an array of scissors, a supply of needles and threads, rulers, etc. A stash that could cover a small army A room, floor or bldg to hold it all. Enjoy your journey into the wonderful world of quilting addiction. |
Hello and welcome from Alabama :D Does your feed dog drop down?If it doesn't you will have to use the darning plate that comes with your machine. Hope this helps

Welcome from Texas. There are people here who can answer anything you ask, and help you as you learn. When I am helping someone to start, I suggest starting with small projects, like candle mats, table runners, and lap quilts. Sometimes, if one starts out with a big project, they get discouraged and lose interest.

Welcome from Nebraska. When I just started, I really ( and still do ) enjoyed Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day series. They taught me quiet a bit. Very easy directions - pictures and all, too. lol You'll pick up a lot of good tips on this group too. Just have fun and enjoy it!

Welcome! You are in for a fun ride. I wouldn't buy any more books as of yet. Just keep reading the posts, bookmark what you think is helpful, try out small projects, ask questions, take a class if you want, and share your triumphs.

Hi, Joe and welcome from Massachusetts!
My favorite reference book for quilting is Quilts, quilts, quilts! Though, I would check out the public library until you get your idiot book in the mail because that may have all the same info in it, just w/o the eye-candy. Also check out blogs and about.com/quilting . there are tons of resources on line for free; and of course ask questions, there will always be a quilter near by to offer assistance. Cheers, Cathy |
Hi Joe and welcome to the board from Oregon, I cant help you as I am new to quilting to, but there are wonderful people on the board that will help you out. Penny
