I am new to quilting. My first quilt started out as curtains for my laundry room and grew into a two sided (summer and winter sides) nine square quilt. It is big and heavy. To bad because we do not use it. I took it to a quilter and before it was quilted and bound it cost $417.00. A little much to say the least. Then thought I'd try another and didn't know what to make so did a Christmas Quilt. Had a pattern for this one. I just took it to the quilters. It is a large queen. Don't like little quilts. Now I have started a Tumbling Blocks quilt. Am just using scraps. I am one that doesn't like to make stuff, especially as large as a quilt, and not use it. So, I have decided to make just quilt tops. They aren't so large to store. Then when I get daring I might try to quilt the quilt myself. I'm afraid of the unknown so is hard to venture onto unknown territory. But after a time of thinking, and a daring mood I do manage to finish projects. Have a great day
Rita

Hi and welcome from New York. Start by making smaller quilts and quilting them yourself to begin building your skills.

Welcome to the Board. I am a fellow Minnesotan. I am from Echo, MN, (near Granite Falls, MN). I think Fergus Falls is 3-4 hours north of here. I am also fairly new to the Board but have already gained alot of knowledge. Especially from the Tutorials everyone puts on here. They're better than some quilt magazine directions! I am also a fairly new quilter and free motion quilt on my Bernina sewing machine. I am dreaming of getting a long arm soon--but right now it is still a dream!. Good luck with your sewing ventures.

Tis the season to be quilting.

Ritacarl 12-02-2010 11:25 AM

Well, well, small world. I lived in Blaine before we moved up here. I lived on 87th and Able. Moved up here in 2000. Built a house on the lake and retired in 2005.

If you buy a long arm quilting machine, you'll be knocking out those quilts in a hurry. I know that they not inexpensive, but if you're making lots of quilts, they are worth every penny. We use Handi Quilters.
