Hi all,

I'm an artist, traveler and greyhound lover. I've quilted off and on for years, but have spent the last five years living/traveling in my RV, with little space for quilting. I'm in the process of settling down again, and hope to delve into my fabric stash any day now.

My mom has a great quilt guild that I'll probably join.

I also paint and do abstract photography, and most of my quilting is an extension of that kind of "vision."

I look forward to getting to know y'all.

Hi everyone

I am not new to quilting just to this chat room. I have quilted for about ten years but just in the last few years -after I retired- have had more time to sew. Today I made 7 napkins which are a lined semi circle, then after they are pressed and folded they look like christmas trees. They aren't hard but you have to remember how to fold them just so.

I like the more traditional quilts and like most all colors except brown and orange in big pieces.

I have 4 adult children, and 10 grandchildren from the age of 25 to 4. I have made quilts for all the kids and about half of the grandchildren. I have been widowed twice so I have swore off men!

Hi, Karen. Glad you're getting into quilting as an extension of artistic expression. It really is an art form! :D

ibmama4 12-05-2009 05:48 AM

Where in Iowa do you live? I live in west central IL. I have friends in Fairfield. Did you go to the quilt show in Des Moines, we were there every day, and I throughly enjoyed it.

They are really sweet! Mine is a 10 year old retired racer, who ran in Connecticut. I've had him since he was just over 2 years old, and he might as well still be a puppy. He's good buddies with my little Italian greyhounds, and he's shown me the meaning of "heart dog." His name is Gryffin. ;)

Here he is romping in a friend's yard...

Hello to both of you from Nebraska!

I enjoyed the pics of your dogs. They look so laid back. Did they travel with you? No wonder you had no room to quilt

GryffinSong 12-07-2009 04:46 PM

Thanks, Quilt Mom. Yes, all five dogs traveled with me. The little ones don't usually take up much space, but it certainly was a challenge at times. They are pretty laid back at most times. But they have their silly moments too. I was able to sew a tiny amount, but cutting anything out was pretty much out of the question! LOL

Welcome Karen, glad to have you here. Your greyhound looks like a giant next to the little Italians, but they're all beautiful! :-D

BTW Thanks Loretta for the link to the story about Jasmine the greyhound - I'd missed it before. ;-)

GryffinSong 12-08-2009 12:53 PM

Thanks Loretta ... what a great story about Jasmine!!!

amma 12-08-2009 01:02 PM

Do they call the little Italian Grey Hounds, Whippets?

GryffinSong 12-08-2009 01:30 PM

Hi amma, whippets are yet a third breed. If you line up the three breeds next to each other, physically they're very similar. Greyhounds are the largest (generally 60 - 70 pounds), whippets are medium sized (perhaps 30ish pounds), and Italian greyhounds are the smallest at 8-12ish pounds.

Greyhounds and Italian greyhounds are both ancient breeds with examples in the artwork from ancient Rome as well as medieval Europe. Whippets are a recent breed, developed by mixing smaller dogs with greyhounds to achieve a slightly sturder, medium sized sighthound. All can participate in amateur racing and lure coursing sponsored by various dog associations. In the AKC, the Italian greyhound was shown in the toy group, but I think they recently changed that so they show with the hounds.

amma 12-08-2009 01:56 PM

Thank you for explaining that to me :D:D:D
All of your dogs are so beautiful!!!

GryffinSong 12-08-2009 04:54 PM

Here's a clarifying picture, I hope. The big guy is my greyhound. The medium guy is a friend's whippet. And the little guys are some of my Italian greyhounds. :)
