I'm a new quilter too, I have completed one, yes just one, and am trying a new one. I'm from Virginia, and enjoying this quilting very much. I have many questions and am glad to have a forum to help me find my way around. Thanks for being here~! |

Well, since you asked........ :)
My problem is my second quilt top is 3/8 of an inch out of square...I hate to cut off 3/8 of an inch on the one side because it will show on my square on the outside, they won't all look the same size (before borders). So I am perplexed as to what to do about this. I really thought I did a good job with the cutting and sewing of the squares, but it's the size of a double bed, and I guess it must have gotten away from me a bit. So it's hard to lay out and get square. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all so much! |
How bad does it show, Chili? Doesn't SOUND like a lot and once it's spread over the bed, it won't be laying flat? If it looks ok from a galloping horse, I'd just live with it and move on to the next one!

And, what was stated above is exactly what my LQS always says...'if the man on the galloping horse won't notice, then it doesn't matter':)I doubt he will see 3/8" off....that actually could be a difference in repressing w/the iron too:)Enjoy yourself and quilting!! I think I will try the stretch before I try to cut....I hate to cut.........ughhhhhh....I always feel like I am doing something wrong and it's going to bite me in the end...........just not confident enough yet to know exactly what to do.

Welcome from a fellow "newbie" in the Bay Area (CA)! I think I would second my colleagues on the "galloping horse" test -- 3/8" in a double-sized quilt is a much different problem than 3/8" in a wallhanging, like what I like to do. I truly don't think it is a big deal. I'd suggest that you just put your borders on as usual, but take an average of the top, middle, and bottom width (or length, if that was where the problem was) and cut your borders to that measurement. Pin the ends and the center of the borders/top together, then maybe 1-2 places equidistant between those points. I will always remember the advice given to me years and years ago: if you need to ease in a bit of extra length, be sure to "sew with a loose bottom" -- meaning to put the fabric to be eased in on the bottom and the shorter fabric on top. Your feed dogs (the little "grabber things" under the presser foot that move the fabric along) will do the rest for you. I think you'll find that your 3/8" will work itself in between your pins and you'll be fine... And on the off chance it doesn't? Put that end under the pillows at the head of the bed and just enjoy the rest of the quilt without guilt! 8) |
