Welcome from Idaho...you'll love this QB and the people here. I use my "old" metal thimble I've had for years. Searched for a new one in case I loose it, but haven't found the right size.

It's hard to answer that. I have just tried several different kinds and tried to use them long enough to decide if I like it or not. I think trial and error may be the best method.

If you go to quilt shows, Tommie Lane sells thimbles custom made for your finger. The Thimble Lady sells thimbles also. Otherwise, try on metal thimbles until you find one that is comfortable, either with a hole for your fingernail or closed in. If it feels loose sometimes, put part of a bandaid on the inside or if you have lost weight, insert a strip of moleskin to get the fit you want.

Welcome from Mid-Missouri! I have searched for a thimble that fits for forty years and finally found one just north of Branson, Mo. Fits perfectly.
