I am a new quilter. My greatest difficulty has been in marking the quilt. I followed directions which stated to mark after sandwiching and basting. I have a great kitchen island on which to work. But, when I mark a grid on my muslin squares to offset the applique, the muslim "moves" or "stretches" making the marking difficult (sandwich flat on counter top). I do not know what the problem is - if it is poor quality muslim, the marking instrument (erasable quilting pencil), my method or "par for the course". Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I like to mark mine before they are sandwiched, I think it's easier to manipulate. If your using a stencil at all you might want to invest the $15 in a pounce pad. It has chalk dust in it and comes off when ironed, really easy to use.

I mark some,but mostly use design in block or fabric. I do use the pounce pad for some, soapstone on med to dark color & chalk wheels ( blue or white ). I hand quilt & mark as needed in working area.

Welcome from Michigan. I mark mine before they are sandwiched, so there is only 1 layer of fabric to deal with.

If you use something to mark that will not rub off easily or disappear, I don't see any reason why you can't mark before sandwiching.
