My grandmother
Hello my name is April. I learned how to see when I was pregnant with my first daughter. My mother inlaw at the time had taught me. I love it. That's something I would never thank her enough for. Like most grandmother's in that time Also was always at her sewing machine. I admired her knowledge watching her see. After I hand my second daughter my grandmother passed away. My father ask if I would like my grandmother old sewing machine. I told my dad I would be honored. Years later I have only one machine. That's my grandmother's Singer. I refuse to use any other machine. When I am working on a project j I feel Grandma hands guiding my hands. I need to take in for repair but I can't wait to feel Grandma touch again. |

Hi April welcome to the board from NE Ohio.

Welcome from Maryland. I understand the honor and thrill of using grandmother's sewing machine. I just inherited a blue Universal that my grandmother used in the 50s. I feel very connected to her when I touch it. It has to be rewired for safety before I can use it (I just got it in July) but I can hardly wait.

I have my mom's Singer treadle, but don't sew on it at the present time. Welcome from the beautiful mountains of western NC.

Welcome from So. Cal. I feel the same way about my mom's 1950 Singer 15-91, She taught me to sew on that machine and it is still going strong. I also love to sew with my great-great Aunt May's Damascus treadle machine from 1925. Neither of my sisters sewed the way I did growing up so it was a connection I had with my mother. Luckily it was my mother that gave me her machine, I told her the only thing I wanted to inherit was the machine, which she said was silly and just gave it to me since she was't sewing anymore. (I couldn't get it in my car fast enough so she wouldn't change her mind.)

Welcome from Texas. What a lovely story you gave to us about your grandmother & her machine. It's a priceless treasure that you have inherited from her & I know you will sew many beautiful things on it....remembering her the whole time.
