Welcome from Southern California! It was the Navy that brought us here and we decided to stay - 39 years and counting!

Thanks for taking care of all of us!

Very nice quilt!! I thought you were going to tell us that you sewed that on the submarine... we have heard of quilters who take their sewing machines in the rvs, the semi truck quilters but a submarine!! LOL!!
You did great... check out eleanor burns and the log cabin quilt or rail fence quilt these are both great patterns for beginners and fast... I started this way and my husband and I tied the log cabin flannel quilts I made for the family.

Welcome from AZ! My husband is an ex-submariner too, and he is also my 'creative consultant' when it comes to my quilting. When I get stuck, he usually has a good idea to help me get 'unstuck!'

Welcome to the world of quilting. You and your wife did a wonderful job. To aid with cutting use a rotary cutter, mat and acrilic ruler. Also a quarter inch foot is nice for the sewing machine. Thank you for your serice to our country.

I second this. I learned this way and used the rail fence book to teach several others to quilt.

Welcome to the board from Spring, Tx. Looks like they've already told you about both strip piecing and using an acrylic ruler with that rotary cutter. Hope you're using a cutting mat under that rotary cutter. There are a lot of beginners tutorials online as well as some great beginner books. Looking at the tutorials here will be quite helpful. No! You do not have to individually cut a bunch of squares - isn't that great news. Happy quilting and you can learn a lot here!
