New to this and kind of a hot mess!
Hi all! My name is Stacey, and my user name pretty much lays it out there! ;) 30, mom of 2 little girls (my youngest, 4, just started pre-school :( , currently planning my wedding (or his funeral, I havent decided for sure which, yet!!!)
I am completely self-taught, working from a Brother machine that sat brand-new-unopened in the closet for THREE YEARS before I ever touched it. LOL I couldnt tell you that AHA! moment that made me want to quilt , but I think for being a "self-taught beginner", I do "ok" ;) I have to my name thus far: 1 twin size quilt (My first - "BooBoo Blankie") 1 baby quilt but its actually pretty large, NEARLY twin size (with matching pillow) 1 keepsake wall hanging quilt And I have one in the works currently. (Rustic Patriotic-themed rag quilt) I am actually into MANY things and self-taught in all of them: sewing (baby clothes, pj's), quilting, pillows, furniture MAKING as well as refinishing/re-purposing, cake decorating and random crafting. The "SewsSorta" part of my user name comes from being self-taught. I dont know any of the "proper" terms or techniques, cant follow a pattern and still havent figured out how use my cutting mat and clear square properly, but I manage and I can run my little machine and my stitches serve the purpose! LOL Dont know what a "disappearing 9 patch" is, cant miter a corner, have NO clue what bias tape is.... Yeah, told you Im a hot mess!!!! :p Oh, and I cant hand sew to save my life. ;) Cant sew a button hole, Ive never sewn a zipper.... I could go on and on!!!!!! I will post some pictures later, but wanted to jump in and introduce myself while I have a few minutes! Great to "meet" you all; all of your work is LOVELY and inspiring! |
You're a riot! Welcome to the Board! I'm looking forward to your future posts and pictures! I made a boo-boo blankie too LOL
LOL! The "riot" tends to come from my ADD, which also explains a LOT of my "hot mess" issues! LOL Like quilting and my inability to do a pattern, for example.... I do square patches. I have toyed with triangles; wont go there... but I dont have the patience to sit and cut/piece 500 teeny tiny little pieces to make one BLOCK! LOL!!!!!!!!! My ADD actually lends a TON of creativity to my stuff, so it has its advantages!!! ;)
Oh, and I must add.... I dont "quilt". As in the all-over-ziggy-zaggy-swirly-wavy-pretty sewing.... It would end up looking more like my sewing machine threw up thread if I tried ;)
You might look up "strip piecing" when you think you want to try a block with more pieces. There are many ways to make it look as if you have a zillion little pieces. Videos are good for me. I can pause and rewatch the tricking parts. Try YouTube for bunches of them. Also www.quiltinaday.com has many you can watch for free.
If you get stuck, there is always someone on the board that has had the same issue and can help you solve it. Welcome from Illinois! |
Howdy and welcome, from Texas!
Welcome from Ontario, Canada. It sounds like you're well on your way into quilting. When You posted "kind of a hot mess" I was thinking menopausal hot flashes like me.:D Aren't you glad you're too young for those?

Welcome Stacey. We have some great tutorials here. If you want to watch videos, the Missouori Star Quilt Company has some great ones. Just go here: http://www.missouriquiltco.com/ and click on tutorials. It is sometimes easier to learn by watching instead of by reading a pattern.

Hi Stacey, welcome from NE Ohio. Sounds like you've got your hands full.
A big welcome from Texas.
Hello Stacey, welcome from Oklahoma!!! :)
Welcome from Minnesota and happy quilting :)
that's how I got my start! I had a huge desire and not much else, well patience, I have a lot and use plenty! Don't put yourself down and give yourself plenty of time, it will all come to you...however....... if you're "jumping around like a fart on a curtain rod" as my husband says it may take you longer to get it. I like to do lots of different things too but each one needs dedicated time to learn. Once you learn them then you can multi task on work on several at one time.
Well I hope it's a wedding you plan and not the other but I certainly understand, I'm on #3! Good luck in all your endeavers and welcome to the board. |
Thanks everyone! :)
(And no menopausal hot flashes for me yet.... but I do get hot flashes of sorts on occasion.....like when I manage to sew my finger nail to a quilt square... yeah, definitely a hot flash! LOL!!) |

One day I just started making a quilt and have been at it for a long time now. I found my ripper was my best friend for a long time and still have to use it more than I would like.
