Hi, I am quite new to quilting but have been sewing for many years. I have 2 computerized SM, one serger and my favorite, a vintage Kenmore cabinet model that I plan to do most of any quilting with. My second grandbaby is on the way and I promised a quilt similar to the Pottery Barn baby boy airplane one. The difficult part is first. Making the appliques. I have had the fabric for some time and did manage to get the applique traced onto some freezer paper right before this trip out of town. Tough part ahead.
Should I use paint on starch around the edges to tun under or just iron on and snip the curves? :?

Hello and welcome from Ontario. I am afraid I am no help when it comes to your questions about applique, but someone here will be able to give you some ideas.

Hi! I've just joined here too. What caught my eye on your post was your doing an airplane quilt. I just finished one! It was the first applique quilt I've done in a while. I used wonder-under (I think that is what it is called) and zig-zagged the edges. I really had a good time making this quilt! Hope someone on here who really knows what they are doing will help you out... I will waiting on their responses!
