Newbie Inspired by Cindy Needham's Work
Hi everyone! Have been sewing apparel and home dec all my life, but hadn't ever been inspired to quilt...until I came across Cindy Needham's Heirloom Whole Quilt work, and I am awestruck! I have no idea how long it would take to learn something like that, but as I deal in antique and vintage lace & linens, I am dying to learn it! Where do I start?????
I am a retired teacher. I live on the north shore of Long Island, NY, with my hubby, two Yorkies & a Maltese. Thanks for reading! Dorothy |

Hi from Ohio!

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. If you want to start with whole cloth first, then watch a few youtube videos on hand quilting. Make yourself up a small quilt sandwich, buy a hand quilting lap frame and practice stitching on it. You will need quilting hand thread, betweens(quilt needles) and a comfortable quilting thimble.

Sorry, I assumed because you wanted to use antique linens that you wanted to hand quilt. If you want to learn machine quilting, Cindy Needham I believe offers Craftsy classes.

Welcome to the board! I just visited your website. It's beautiful. Love the lace boots. Perfect for the bride that would have a very fancy western themed lace wedding. Your website is stunning!

Do you have a quilt shop anywhere nearby? That would be my first step. See if they offer classes, and take one. Some shops have "set" classes, ones that start on a certain date, last for a certain number of weeks and they teach a certain project. Others have more "freeform" classes, where you start when you want and they teach you whatever it is you want to learn. I would look for a shop that teaches these freeform type of classes and tell her what you want to do. Most teachers have years and years of practical experience and can help you with any problems or questions you have. This would give you a feel as to whether you want to continue or not.

If you want classes, I would also look into the ones at Craftsy.com and Annie's.com. There is also a site on the web called Favequilts, and it offers free patterns in beginner, intermediate and advanced quilting. It also has a lot of tutorials on the site.
Pinterest has a surprising number of boards devoted to quilting, sewing, quilting tutorials and sewing tutorials. Check it out! You'll be surprised! |
