I lurked here for a couple of months a while back and then somehow 'lost' the digest version. I'm really glad to have been added back on. I retired after 32 years of teaching about 10 years ago. I always wanted to quilt and I found a group that took me under their wings 6 years ago. I hand-piece and hand-quilt...mostly because modern machines scare me with all of their buttons and gizmos. It takes me about 6 months to finish one, but that's because i enjoy my grandchildren as often as possible. That's another reason I hand-piece - it's good to have while traveling. I live in GA but fly to Texas a lot - usually at least twice a month.

I just gave my dear MIL a lap quilt. She is in a nursing home with dementia. Bless her heart, she has so much trouble remembering anything for more than a few minutes, I really didn't expect her to remember anything about the quilt. She was very pleased to get it and showed it to everyone the day I gave it to her. When I went back to see her a week later, she still remembered that I had made it for her. Absolutely amazing. I'm making an I Spy baby quilt for a cousin. I'm thinking about making MIL one too. Maybe it would help to spark her memory a little and would give her something to talk about...something that is becoming more and more difficult for her.

I have gotten so much information from this board and so many helpful tutorials. I'll post some pictures of my quilts when I figure out how.

Welcome from Central Texas. I think the I Spy for your MIL is a great idea. Maybe you can put things that she likes on it. EX: if she had a pet or favorite pastime, you could include blocks of those. It might get her talking about her life.
