Newbie

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and to quilting. I've loved quilts and have wanted to quilt for a long, long time. Unfortunately, I've lacked confidence to get started. Does anyone have any tips for someone about to embark on their very first quilt? I'd like to make something I'll actually use and was thinking about trying my hand at a toddler quilt. :)

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. If you can take a begiiner quilt class at your local quilt shop it helps. If not, watch some of Jenny Doan's videos from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. to find a simple and easy pattern to start with. You may want to start by making a Christmas tablerunner to see how you like it. Do you have a sewing machine or are you going to piece by hand?

Hello and welcome! Your suggestion to start with a toddler quilt is a good idea. The fun fabrics and large block pieces will ease you into quilting. You must have a special toddler in your life- is he/she your own child or grandchild?

I usually advise folks to pick a few 9" patterns and make pot holders to start. Each pot holder will teach you all the aspects of quilting - piecing, sandwiching, quilting and binding. If you make pot holders to use - be sure to use 100% cotton batting or better yet the thermal batting specifically for heat resistance - DO NOT USE POLYESTER or a Poly Blend!!

Dozens of Free 9" patterns can be found at www.quilterscache.com

Enjoy!!

Welcome from the heart of wine country in Napa California. Depending on where you are at, the local quilt shop class may be your best bet. Tis board is also amazing in having great advice!
