Nobody hears me when I am wits end
 Being new to the forum and quilting I thought i would add my 5 cents!! Having made only a few quilts I consider myself a beginner in awe of the precious talent on this board. My morning agenda consists of coffee and drooling looking at all the beautiful quilts. However, I have gotten discouraged lately. I have always worked from patterns (except for one I saw a pic and wallah it came out the same - must of been a blond moment). The last two quilts which I am in the process of making, both of the patterns have mistakes. One was written wrong (at least I thought so) The other, had a color diagram and the colors were incorrect. For a beginner quilter, this becomes very:mad:. I was a basketmaker and wrote several patterns. I always had them tested from the directions without looking at the basket - and only at the picture - and without myself being present. I feel that if someone sells a pattern at the price of $11 +. it should be tested first. Thanks for listening my heart has stopped racing.

welcome and I agree. I have been a pattern tester and am doing ot again now, it is very important for them to be clear and correct, (you should not have to figure out what is wrong and how to correct it unless it's your own mistake)

Hello!
Welcome from Minnesota! I totally agree with you! A pattern should be tested and should be user friendly!!!! |
I'm sorry to hear you have had so much bad luck with printed patterns. Sometimes I have to tear out two stitches for everyone I put in, when I find mistakes in the pattern. Keep trying and you will become a pro at quilting.

The very first quilt I made (Bento Box) had an error on it (the earliest version I believe). Since then I've made only a few quilts from a pattern.
But recently I started a Mystery Quilt Block of the Month - a freebie - but run by competent people (one of whom is famous for the Dear Jane Patterns - so you would think "knows how to write a pattern"!). SOOO many of the block patterns have been wrong that a bunch of us that were following it just plain stopped. So disappointing!! |
Hi, welcome from Michigan! I was a tester..once...never again! It was awful and was still put on the market.
|
Welcome from Texas. Some writers are better than others!
|
you'll even find mistakes in books. That is why when you quilt you have to be flexible! I started out making one quilt and after finding the mistake had to totally change it! At the time I was too new to figure out how to adjust

Hello, welcome from Oklahoma!!!

Welcome from the California desert.

A big SHO-ME welcome from Missouri!!!

Howdy and welcome, from TX!
I agree, 100%! Unfortunately, some people simply don't seem to know how to write patterns/instructions. |
Welcome from Ontario, Canada. You would think that before publication someone would have actually tested the pattern. Very disappointing!
|
Hi and welcome from NE Ohio. I agree also. Had a purse pattern that was badly written. I was so frustrated with the whole thing that I threw the whole thing including the pattern in the fire.
|
Welcome. some pattern writer's post correction on their web site. Yes I do think they should test their pattern
|
Welcome from Minnesota and happy quilting :)
|
Hi from Ohio!
|
That is so frustrating and I agree. I seldom follow a pattern. Perhaps just to get me going. I put the block together and once in a while I will look at a direction. As time goes on you will see what needs to happen and do it without thinking. I agree that for that kind of money, a pattern should be tested.
Hang in there and keep quilting. I really enjoy my EQ software and trust it more than most patterns. |
Welcome from Michigan!:)

Welcome to the QB from North Carolina :) You'll love it here.
How right you are....I hate finding patterns with mistakes in them....or worse yet, I don't find them till it's finished  |
I agree.. I do't do patterns.. I prefer my own designs, and sometimes make changes as I go..
|
I agree. I just did one, a kit, and it neglected to tell you how wide to cut the strips, and there were three different width of strips required. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy!

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!!
|
Welcome!! I agree with you -- folks should be more careful when they write directions and they should always have someone else make the quilt. I recently bought a very expensive (for me) book on making handbags. Every pattern in the book skipped steps at an important point in the description. This is one reason why I rarely use patterns -- I draft my own and work out the construction myself and save the $$.

Good morning and welcome from Illinois. Have fun and enjoy and yes, it is very frustrating to find mistakes in a purchased pattern. Did you contact the pattern maker and complain and point out the mistake(s). My friend had that problem working on a block of the month from McCall's Quilting Magazine and she contacted them and the next month, they posted a correction and also emailed her the corrected pattern.

Hi and welcome from Michigan.

Hi, Welcome -
I share your frustration at patterns that have mistakes and/or are poorly written. It's especially sad/bad for a beginner that thinks the fault is his/hers - and not in the pattern. |
I hear your pain all the way in La Crosse! And I totally agree! M
