Welcome! I have seen quite a few people here shop for their quilting fabric by buying gently used clothes at Goodwill, Salvation Army and garage/yard sales. You can buy shirts, dresses, skirts for a really good price (aka - cheap!) and get a good amount of fabric out of them to use for quilting. Blankets can be purchased to use for the batting. Sheets can be used for the backs of the quilts. After all, that was the original purpose for quilting - use up the good parts of discarded clothing and other fabric. Have fun and be creative!

See what you can come up with using some of the clothing that you no longer wear, or that you can find at garage sales and thrift stores. Become a scavanger! I search through garage sales, thrift stores, estate sales, etc. for new or gently used bed sheets that can be cut up or used for backings, cotton blouses or shirts to cut up, small knick knacky bowls or dishes that can be turned into pincushions, scraps of fabric, books, etc. See just how much you can come up with for as little money as possible. All these things will add to your stash. Quilts don't have to be made with expensive fabric to be beautiful. You'll not spend too much and you'll have a great time doing it.

p.s. Remember, ALWAYS offer less. The very least they can do is say no. Even then you'll still get a bargain but usually you'll get the item for less than what they've priced it. A lot of thrift stores can't reprice but estate sales and garage sales can and do.

Great advice!!!
