Rumored?
Word is going around that JoAnn's filed bankruptcy and will be closing soon. I sure hope this is not true. JoAnn's is our last sheriff in town and we will have to travel and hour an more for fabric!

I read that too and a friend of mine down in Orlando is losing their JoAnne's but that seems to be the only one in that area that is closing. Problem with that is it's her closest Viking Store also so she'll have to travel a distance to the one up in Altamonte Springs.
I'm lucky my Viking store is in a fabric store and not a JoAnne's store but still I have to travel 63 miles to get to it even. |
From what I've read, they may file bankruptcy to help with their debt restructuring...may or may not mean stores actually close.

I just did some searching for any solid information about a bankruptcy and all articles, news, and so on say "may file for chapter 11 bankruptcy". As cashs_mom said, filing is not closing. All it means is the company needs to restructure the business to clear deb and to return to financial stability. Will stores close? Perhaps some less viable sites or where there are multiple stores in close proximity, but it is not an end to the business. Continue to shop, then listen and watch for changes in the business.

The JoAnn's in my area is like a ghost town, there is hardly anyone in the store when I go. Recently they had batting on sale but didn't have what I wanted in stock. So I ordered it online, I ordered 6 yards....it arrived in a big box, but they cut 6, one yard pieces. I called JoAnn's customer service and was told to send it back. They didn't offer to send me one 6 yard piece of batting.

Long story but I won't shop at Joann. I ordered online and the item was defective. The email reply was to take the item to the nearest store or return by mail at my cost. The local Joann manager would not take the item back because I bought it online. I showed her the email and she said no she wouldn't do it at her store as it would affect her bonus and drop her profits if she took back all online orders. It took over six months to get my refund. I really don't care if that Joann closes, that manager is still there.

It saddens me that you had such a crummy experience with JoAnn's and batting. I have twice now ordered W&N by the roll when it was on sale at JA and had perfect service, quick free delivery I used a coupon to reduce the price. I will order again as soon as I have room for another BIG box.
My store is busy, cleaner now that in years past and pretty consistent sales folks. I have seen the same faces for long spans of time like 4 or more years. I would like more fabric and less fleece but I see the same thing in one of my local quilt shops too. My one complaint is the music! Yikes some of it is not appropriate for a business but that is my bug-a-boo and I just get on with my shopping and get out. |

Onebyone, I had a very similar experience. Luckily, the item wasn't terribly expensive - but I had ordered 4 and received 3. One of them broke the first time it was used. (A Wilton product.) Lesson learned.
Their sales policies annoy the heck out of me. Raise prices to a ridiculous amount so that they can give a discount or coupon. Just price things accurately in the first place. When they stopped carrying W&N a few years ago, and were pushing their brand of batting, I found that I could get it online from a few places and have it delivered to my door for less than when I was going to the store with my "good" coupon. Their batting was lousy and they found out that they'd better go back to W&N, but I've never bought it there since. Where I am in FL, the closest one is nearly an hour away. Less than 30 miles, but horrible traffic. Totally not worth the drive. |
I read that they would be closing only certain (underperforming) stores in certain states. But from past experience, news like this usually signals the beginning of the end.

I almost never go there for a variety of reasons but I was there last week to buy some netting. The huge store was empty, as it always seems to be. Even though they totally remodeled it a couple of years ago the fabric area was a mess and it was almost impossible to get anyone to help. I asked where the netting was and a young girl just pointed to the general area. The whole experience made me glad I don't shop there.

No longer just a rumor! Reorganization time. I'm sure some store closings and such as well. I really hope they get rid of the fake pricing where they don't expect anyone to buy at regular price...

Thanks for the update, Iceblossom. My local JoAnn's is full or reduced this and than all the time. But it does seem to have consistent new items, replacing items that are out of stock. I hope it stays, I don't often buy fabric there but for notions, and seasonal decor it is my first stop. I occasionally will purchase a bolt of their best white or cream wide back muslin. I find it of good quality and I do by the large roll of W & N batting from them online.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/comp...f68aac97&ei=34 The home decor items are just silly. Totally unrealistic prices, but they start at 40% off the day they are put on the shelves, and the discount grows as the holiday/season gets closer. The last thing I tried to buy there was some black buttons. They didn't even have a good selection of those. It won't bother me a bit if they close. |
