Very very new to quilting - so new in fact that I have only been THINKING of beginning my first quilt
So I am likely to have many questions - I have been inspired to take up quilting - something I remember my paternal grandmother doing since finding this board one night (thanks to stumble) are there any other board members from the UK I dont know about the rest of you but I really find these intros difficult as I never know what people might want to know about me so any questions do ask :) |
HI, welcome and Hafa Adai from Guam!
You will find TONS of help and inspiration here. Yes, there are ladies from UK, maybe right down the road from you! |
Welcome from California!
We do have some others from the UK and dearly enjoy them. Do you have a quilt in mind as your first one? We'd be thrilled to help you in any way we can and keep abreast of your progress, if possible! Do you have any of the quilts your grandmother made? |
Hello from the north east of England, where abouts are you. There are a few of us from the UK and I am sure I speak for most of them when I say joining this group has given us many hours of enjoyment, looking at other peoples beautiful work, getting encouragement, and joining in the live chat where I have made many new friends.
I am sure you will enjoy your time here Katherine |

Tirnhi and Celeste thank you for my lovely welcome
Celeste - I am so new to this I thought I would start with doing a stack and slash quilt as I have many fabric off cuts in pinks that I can easily get a 10" square from I thought doing this it would give me a lot of practice using a rotary cutter - I bought one yesterday and have never used one before - I also thought it would give me good practice on learning about a scant 1/4" seam as there will be a lot of seams that within the blocks it wont be THAT important if my 1/4" isnt as accurate as it should be and then the joining of the blocks the border wadding and backing will I hope be similar for all quilts I make and then of course the stitching My friend is due to have a baby in late June early July and I am hoping to have something nice for the baby by then - is it possible and what size quilt would you all recommend for the baby If I start with 10" squares and loose about 2" due to seams how many do you think I should make actually lets start at the beginning and ask what I should consider in my materials selection - then if I have to go buy some to go with what I have that will be fine better to find out now than later Hi Katherine I am from Wiltshire so not close enough to you to pop round for a cuppa and a lesson or two :) I am so excited about this new adventure - I feel like its christmas and I have pressies waiting to be opened Tirnhi and Celeste thank you for my lovely welcome this is fabric I was give and plan to use in the baby quilt do you think the mix will be ok fabric I was given |
You are lucky to live in such a lovely part of the UK, I have an elderly aunt that inspired me to start quilting many many years ago who live in Devizes and cousin in Trowbridge. You have a lot of quilting groups in that area so you should never be stuck for help.
Katherine |
That fabric is REALLY pretty.
Take a Google for easy baby quilts and I"m sure you'll find a pattern to your liking. I still look at those when I want to make something and have no clue what to make and/or nothing I have strikes my fancy. |
Hi Karen
I wasnt ignoring you I think I was typing and trying to include a picture and missed your message - seems you are too far away for a cuppa as well :) I will shout when I need help :) Katherine I worked in Devizes as a teacher at Southbroom Junior School - you will have to see if your relatives have heard of it Tirnhi I am so glad you like the fabric - off to do a google I have just got back from the library - I am so inspired by this site I thought I would join so I can borrow some books :) |
Is that the school on the green ? My Auntie was a dinner lady there for years, she lives in Pans Lane.
Katherine |
I forgot to ask where do you live?
|
Yes it is the one on the green :)
I live in Chippenham which is about 20mins from Devizes and a little further from Trowbridge :) |
Thats ok...no problem......but if your inviting me for a cuppa...I can borrow a bike!!! lol!
Karen |

Hello Aaleeigha and welcome. Sylvia here from West Sussex. some distance from you but with aid of the internet, just round the corner. I liked your material - very srong colours. If you wanted to make a selection of baby quilts, I can recommend the book by Alex Anderson and there are many books for baby quilts you can pick up quite cheaply on Amazon. You will find all the support and answers you need here, you only have to ask.

Hi I'm from South Wales, not far from Cardiff. I have been involved with patchwork and quilting for the past three/four years. I'm not too bad with the piecing and have finished a few quilt tops (small!!!!) and am trying hard to get a good result with my machine quilting but it's going to take some practice. Collecting the fabrics is addictive and it's really great that quilters are encouraged to build up a stash! Fab word!!
|
Thanks for the welcomes everyone
Andrea - I love to go to Cardiff for shopping ( its only about an hour along the M4 from where I live ) and will be going to Wales on the 4th May for a dog show at Rogerstone near Newport I also make dog collars so have been asked to attend and run a stall there to help out the charity that is organising it to raise some funds |
Will you show us some of your dog collars?
|
Celeste I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them in the pictures section :) thank you for being interested in other things I do :)
H xx |
As a dog lover I was interested in your stall for dog collars. Is the charity you support the Dogs Trust?
|
I do support the dogs trust but I try to do some fundraising for southwest sighthounds they can be found here
http://www.freewebs.com/southwestsighthounds/index.htm I make collars and sell them and the profits go to help with the costs of the dogs I also do home visiting and some transporting Today we went and took some of the kennel dogs to the field to play with my three - now DH and the dogs are all sleeping and all of them look quite content The dog show I will be at will be to raise money for Greyhound Welfare - they are based in Newport in Wales - and they have invited me to set up a stall and hopefully make some money to help the dogs :) |
K9 hello, I knit coats for dogs and make small quilts for the k9knitters to sell , the money goes to the dogs trust and one other smaller animal charity that varies every year, your name reminded me of them
Katherine |
Have read the Sight Hounds web site and hope that more people will think about Greyhounds. I support the Dogs Trust and have done so for many years.and it breaks my heart sometimes when the new dogs arrive and see what a sorry state they are in. good Luck with all you do.
|
That's why I took the name of k9colliedog because I would never forget it. My border collie Lady is getting old now and has slowed down so much but mentally still thinks she is still two years old
|
Karen my ancestors were from the Yorkshire area. They came to the new world around 1635. I have been trying to plan a trip to England now for about 2 years to come to that area to do more research but alas, finances have prevented me from coming. But one day i will get there. :)
|
To all of you who are doing volunteer work for animals I send a great big THANKS!
My sister and I have had four dogs and all but the first came from a rescue group. Two still with us. They are the light of our lives. |
Henry, hello, do you have any idea where in Yorkshire ? Its the largest county in England, but probably would seem small to you, it starts about 1o miles from me.
Katherine |
Welcome aboard and a big ole HOWDY from the great state of TEXAS!!!! I think you will enjoy the board and everyone here seems very helpful and encouraging! Good luck on your first quilt, post pictures when you can....love to see works in progress and then the finished product.
|
Now thats the part that I have no idea....LOL All I know is Yorkshire. I have been trying to find where in Yorkshire for 6 months now, no luck.
|
Welcome to the board. You will find loads of help and inspiration. Looking back on past notices will help you find something about almost anything.
I am a bit firther west than you. I live in beautiful East Devon, not far from Exeter. Goof luck with your first quilt. Jane |
hello Jane, Sylvia here from Wesr Sussex. Is this a picture of your dog? If so he looks gorgeous. We have veen talking dogs a little bit, because there are some supporters of dogs trusts on this site.
|
Yes, this is my dog Bonnie. She was a rescue dog from the PDSA - we have had her for 11 yrs. She is getting on now, is probably 14+ yrs. Getting a little slow now, finds the stairs quite a challenge. She has been the best dog ever. I know her time is nearly up and that thought upsets me, but there it is.
Jane |
Isn't Bonnie adorable? I'm hoping her picture will be able to be posted to the photo's of our furry, feathered and reptilian friends topic.
|
You can't miss Yorkshire Henry!!....it's Englands biggest county, and the friendliest ! Everyone gets a warm welcome in Yorkshire! :)
Karen |
You are going to have such fun on this quilting message board and I am personally so glad to welcome you to the group. I am a beginner, too, but have learned so much from reading about everyone's experiences. And the pictures of finished products just take my breath away. We have a dear friend in Nuneaton so all of you Uker's have a special place in our hearts! (plus your fabrics are lovely--can't wait to see the quilt!)
|
