I believe they are fantastic ... and trying to locate a new one. I have had 3 in the last 25 years -- all bought from the 2-day ad where a rep shows up at a Hancocks or likewise. I have purchased the #2 or #3 machine up from the least expensive. I have worn them out ... they are the ONLY machine that I use. I'm ready for a new one, and inquired at Hancocks today (in Iowa) and was told they may not be doing it anymore. That the company that was, has gone out of business. I found this website trying to do a search on line to find them.

For my personal use, I don't want anything fancy, just forward, back, zigzag, a few decorative stitches (I'm a quilter and sew a LOT!!!) Mine have NEVER been in for repair or service, just maintainted according to book instructions. One of the models (bought about 10 years ago) the presser foot is a little wobbly from side to side. ONLY complaint. I truly hope I can find another one!!! I'm almost 70 now. I think I'm good to wear one, maybe two more out!!!

The only correspondence I've had with the company occurred when I didn't get all the parts with the machine, and I received them VERY promptly ....

can you tell I REALLLLLLLY like them????

You could call your local high school home ec department and ask where they get their machines. Then contact the company and ask how to get a used one. Just a thought. :)

thanx --- did find a rep in New Jersey on the phone who has the machines ... same type of deal ... he is an independent dealer. I know they are out there and will find.

Thanx, your idea is good.

Very few schools have a home ec department any more. They just don't teach sewing. I bought two from our local auction barn to have for my quilting club through our Extension Service. They work fine for what we do. Most members bring their own machines, but in case they don't we have two for them to use. Got them for $50 each plus $60 to have thenm each tuned up.

Hi from Ohio!

tomilu 07-03-2011 04:57 AM

I picked up a Riccar "school" machine at a thrift shop. It was almost brand new and sewed like a deam. I gave it to a lady who was repairing their clothes-there is more of that in this economy. She wrote me later that she just loved sewing on it. I don't think I have ever had a Singer school machine.

Can you tell us a little more about the machine you are talking about....brand and model number? There is a section on this forum that focuses on the older machines and with more information we could probably point you in the right direction.

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D
Unfortunately, Home Ec is one of the classes being dropped in some schools :(

Welcome from the Pacific NW. I bought one of those machines about 20 years ago for my sister's daughter. It's still being used regularly. I got mine from the local sewing machine store. You might check the stores in your area.

MyTyme 07-03-2011 03:07 PM

this is not an "older" machine ... every year Singer comes out with a new model that they put on sale in this manner.

Thanx for your help.

I think this would be your best bet. I have 2 of the singers that you are looking for but I dream of finding a 401A. Every vintage Singer i find are 10 times better machines. But if you insist I did find this.

I was a home ec teacher in the early sixties. And yes, theprogram has changed considerably. It is now called Human Resources. No sewing, no food preparation, etc. Although some of the "older" teachers do find the time (and the resources) to include these skills within their other units of study.

I bought my school model machine new from a Singer shop. I had seen the add and went to check it out. That's the machine I prefer to do my machine quilting on.

Hello and welcome from Minnesota!

ging10ging 07-23-2011 12:21 PM

I bought one in March here in Fl. I know they were traveling thru at the time. Try calling the local Singer Store and see if they can help. I have the tel# for Worldwide 1 800 474-6437. The website I have is www.singerco.com I know they were sold out but try this and maybe you can find out where they are. In my booklet it seems they are in TN. Also see an e-mail [email protected] Good luck. PM if I can be of further help. That last e-mail was what I used to register my machine. Sue
