Trying to Save Old Quilts

I'm new here. I came primarily for advice on saving some quilts I salvaged from a filthy house. I am grateful for any help I receive.

Welcome from Louisiana:) We could help better if you post some photos so we can see what you are working with. It is a good thing to try to preserve old quilts.

Welcome from Southern California! What kind of quilts and are they just dirty or very old and dirty. ERSTAN947 is right, pictures will help, along with some information about the quilts. (Type of fabric and age if you know it.)

I don't have any ideas on cleaning old quilts - but welcome to the board.

Do they need repairs or just dirty? Retro Clean is a product for antique stained textiles. If they need repair, that should be done before washing. If they are too disgusting to repair first, hand stitch netting over the bad spots to prevent further damage. Put a sheet in the tub to aid in lifting the wet quilt out of the tub, and hand agitate with the soap to clean the quilt.

if they are true antique quilts, have them evaluated by a antique conservator before doing anything.

Tartan, I agree with your advice. Best I've heard. Bought and sold old quilts for years. If in doubt about washing, don't. Get an educated opinion as you mentioned.

I might add, an option to start with is place some netting over vacuum hose and gently remove lint and dust first. Do not place in direct sunshine.

Hello from Wisconsin. I was reading about your quilts, over on "Main." It's very sad, and I hope you're able to save them all.
