Waves Hello

I am thrilled to pieces to have found this forum!

I sew and alter my clothes frequently, but mostly via hand sewing because I don't have a good place for my sewing machine, so I sit on the floor with it.

I'm nearly finished with my Cathedral Window pillow covers. Was maybe going into a quilt - but six inch starting squares is too annoying.

However, my favorite nephew (ok, he's my only nephew) really likes the CW and likes to help sew. So, I dug around for an easier method and found Eddie's fantastic tutorial! I'm getting a table for my freebie chunk of a machine, it's visiting the service place right down the street, and nephew and I are going on a fabric hunt. Mostly for the windows, as I've got a huge pile of a pale blue cotton that's delightful to press. It's an odd width, about 75" or so.

So I'm thinking about either 12 or 18 inch starting squares, probably 12". It will get us done that much faster, and I am thinking I'd quilt the top a bit, simply for durability with an 8 year old boy as the owner.

I love working with my nephew. We've made some odd looking stuffed animals, and questionable fabric choices (Do Daleks come in lime green?) but it's fun. Plus, he loves my poor, abused, stained quilt my grandma made me to take to college. So I put up with neon dinosaurs as pillow backs.

So, that's this Nebraskan's winter sewing plans.

Eina

Welcome from Arizona. You're going to love it here! Your plans with your nephew sound like great fun, and I know what you mean about starting out with large blocks; it'll be done quickly and your nephew will be able to start using it sooner.

Well, I'm at best short (5'2"), so sitting on the floor isn't quite that bad. Most proper desks and tables are too tall. But I've got my eye on a table at the thrift store, it's a solid piece, it's just really beat up. My computer chair should fit just fine with it, so it's going to get a ride home tomorrow, and it's going in the corner.

Yeah, I was thinking if 6" blocks were too boring and tedious to ME, it's going to be worse for a rowdy 8 year old boy. 12" will get it done twice as fast, it gives him more room for the fun prints he still likes to show, and I'll just stitch down the windows a bit more. Not a big deal in my world.

Fun or an adventure :) I've discovered brown, lime green and turquoise go together better than I thought they would at least.

Hi from So. California.
I really love your attitude about colors and quilting with kids. It sounds like you have an amazing relationship with your nephew. I have been known to make a "questionable fabric choice" or two and I don't have a rowdy 8 year old boy to help me.
