Greetings from Northern CA. I would recommend the triple rail fence also. It's nice because you don't need to match points. Just make sure your blocks are the same size.

Hello and welcome from an Iowa girl! My first quilt was a flannel baby quilt for my son (he wore it out). It was a double 4 patch. My next quilt was a scrappy rectangle twin size for my daughter and her daughter sleeps with it now. Just remember at this point KeepItSimpleS, and it sounds like that's what you are going to do.
