I just watched msqc new tute on a 4x4 pattern...using a jelly roll plus some yardage. Looks like a fun way to use up some jelly rolls that I have.....but, in construction some jelly rolls strips are sewn together, then recut while some are sewn to the background yardage strips...but she doesnt say how nmany go where...or I just did not hear it! Anyone done this and has the answer......I know she offers the pattern for purchase on the website.

In one, you use all different colors and make a 16 patch block that sews up to 8.5 inches; 8 inches after you sew all of them together as in the quilt. In the other, you use two white squares, cut at 4.5 inches square and make 2 - 4 patches with white on one corner. Then sew a 4 patch to a white square, making sure the white is positioned as you see in the block. Do the same thing again, then sew them together across the middle, making sure the small whites stay in the center.

When you mention that she sews some together, then cuts them....she is probably making stratas.... 4 fabrics sewn together for the 16 patch block. She does 4 of the stratas from different fabrics, then cuts them into 2.5 inch wide strips. Then you take all the four strips cut from the stratas and sew them together to make a 16 patch. Change placement of the stratas....turn them upside down, move from position 1 to position 4 in the blocks...makes the pattern seem more scrappy.

For the block with the larger white squares, she may have made a 2 fabric strata, then subcut into 2.5 inch strips, then sew them together to make the 4 patch corners of the primary block.

Barb in Louisiana - I totally understand the process of construction, my question was, of the jelly roll's 40/42 strips, how many used for scrappy 4 patch construction and how many used for background/strip construction.

I always love her tutorial but on this particular one.. kind of got lost there in some places too.
She usually cut & sew each piece to show you but not this time but regardless I still love her series!

Check her comments below the tutorial. There is a correction in cutting the block sizes after piecing the strips together.

I also watched this tutorial yesterday and found myself with questions. I'm glad then made corrections-----I don't always read all the comments before I start a project--I think I'd better start.
I also noted they are also selling a digital copy and a paper copy of this paper. My question is why get the digital copy if this is going to be on youtube as all of her other tutorials are? Is the digital copy more enhanced?

I just went to the link provided above and counted the A then B blocks. To my it looks like 25 of the A Blocks [the 16 different fabrics] and then the B Blocks is 27 with the 2 solids and the 4 patches attached.

I'm bad, I just recounted, and their are 28 of each blocks, 28 A, 28 B..........I skipped a whole row!
