Default Fee's for YouTube Video's please say it isn't the future trend!!!!

Maybe I just crawled out from under a rock and this isn't new, but I just checked out a Carol Doak video, it was a short clip on YouTube. In order to see the entire video there is a toggle for renting the video for 72 hours @ $4.99.

The C&T publishing is having a sale on one of her popular books and the site then sends you to the YouTube video that you can rent????

I sure hope this isn't a trend with YouTube instructional video's. I so enjoy Missouri Star Quilt tutorials and numerous other videos that have taught me techniques along the way.

I guess classes at popular websites that sell the classes for a one time fee with unlimited viewing are going to be real bargains.

This is the first I've heard of renting youtube videos, however, there have always been very short videos that direct you to a web site to purchase the full version. Seems weird at first, but I've bought videos for a lot more than $5 on a specific technique. Watched them once then never looked at them again. Maybe a smaller $ amount on a rental would be good. HAve to think about this.

PaperPrincess~
I guess I'm a person who needs to review from time-to-time as I 'forget' from one quilt to another on certain techniques.

For instance there is a super slick (to me at least) binding video that an online store has. I seem to always forget the last part and need to 'refresh' my memory, how she folds and tucks :0) It may just be me at my age that I need refreshers and for that reason I'm glad that, so far, I haven't had to pay every month or so when I need to refresh a technique in this brain of mine.

It will be interesting to hear what other's think on this subject.

Wow that could really add up! My Craftsy classes are even more appreciated. I also have a subscription to the Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms which is a great bargain. Besides the great shows that I have learned so much about techniques, different types of quilting, and quilting world personalities, there are great classes and tutorials that are a part of the subscription. The last time I renewed I got an additional 6 months which made it an incredible bargain. I'm going to be focusing on things like this because you can go through a lot of money when you buy things piecemeal and it's easy to lose track of what you've paid for. That being said I have Carol Doak' s new Craftsy class on my wish list until I can purchase it. Love her!

That might be an upcoming thing....nothing is free anymore...so sad. I even notice mags are slowly coming down in price..."good deals abound" on many subscription offers.

Maybe it's just a Carol Doak thing. I sincerely doubt that Missouri Star Quilt Company will ever charge for their video tutorials

Google owns Youtube. There is talk of some type of overhaul for video streams, etc. But since Carol Doak and her kind are PUBLISHED authors and wish to profit from their expertise, expect Google to go along since Google also likes profits.

I'm not dissing these authors, they have a right to monetize. It's just an economic fact. Plus a charge and rent might deter the more innocent type of piracy. You download and give your friends a copy type of piracy that is.

This is one reason I won't use videos. I'll buy the book. Then the info is at my disposal at any time. I don't have to get up and turn on a player or the computer.

I hadn't heard anything about this, but I recently heard that they are trying to figure out how to charge us for sending emails...

As for MSC, if they are doing their own videos, and not posting anywhere but on their own site, that's their call. No one can make them charge if they don't want to. Craftsy seems to shoot a lot of theirs in a Denver Studio and host their own.

With the others that are being charged for - it might also be the publishing company that wants its cut.

I've heard about some of this - I own a Google phone, bought from Google. So stuff like this will appear on Android newsletters and forums.

Where on earth did you hear that? You are already paying for emails by paying for broadband.
