If they're for charity quilts, maybe try even wider strips - like 4".
Even if people in the guild don't come to the actual sewing of charity quilts, contributing x number of strips is something pretty much everyone could do.

4" strips = less cutting of strips, less sewing, less seams, more quilts.

You'd just have to figure out how many strips you'd need for each quilt.
I'm calculating (back of the envelope) around 24 strips for the 48"x64" size.

Formula is:
64 divided by FINISHED strip width (3.5") = 19 (rounded up)
48" (width of quilt) x 19 strips long = 912 inches
912" divided by 40 (width of fabric est) = 23 strips plus 1

I used 40" instead of 42" for WOF to guesstimate some of the inches lost on the diagonal seams when joining the strips, plus one just because.

It's a guesstimate. Check my math. I'm not responsible for anything before noon. :mrgreen:

Looks like using standard Jelly rolls you would use around 36-40 strips.

We did the "Jelly Roll Race" at our quilt guild meeting in July and I won!! It was tons of fun.

Four of us got together a couple of weeks ago and made the 1600" quilt using jelly rolls from Connecting Threads in their batik line (needed 2). Lots of fun, very easy. Lesson learned, the paper towel cardboard that I rolled my stitched 1600" length to was great for transport, but take it completely off the roll before you begin, otherwise it wants to twist.

Looks like fun and what a variety of quilts in the end.

I want to do this but refuse to cut the 18" off and throw it out..really...I am just going to work it in at the end!
