Another Quilt Store Closing - we are losing the in person-on site stores

I was so happy to be able to visit Fons & Porter quilt store in Winterset, Iowa last week. This is the store they always mention in their magazine and where you can sometimes catch a glimpse of Marianne Fons.

When I got there, they said everything was 50% off (fabric, notions, kits, magazines, books, etc.). I asked why and they said the store was closing at the end of October.

So sad to hear. They said their on-line store will continue to operate, so that's good.

I am one who loves to touch the fabric and see it in person. So sad that this may be the "way of the past".

Sorry to see another LQS one go by the wayside.

Wow, that is sad. Guess it is cost efficient just to run the online store.

Fons and Porter are retired and live in different states. I guess they want to be retired from all their businesses.

That is a sad note. They usually have a warehouse sale of their older fabrics during the Des Moines Quilt Show which is next week. I normally stop there and stock up but not this year as I've overspent my quota for the month/year/century. You get the picture. Darn, darn, darn. Well at least their online store will continue.

I'm still bummed out that they stopped publishing "Quilty" magazine. That was one of my favorites. :(

When I spoke to my LQS owner last week (who is also closing end of October and is also going strictly to on-line sales) she said we have to trust that her quality of fabric has always been good. I'm not sure that I'm really going to love the on-line shopping experience as much as I love pulling bolts of fabric, lying them on a cutting table and matching up my color schemes... and did I mention how much I love to touch?
