My sweetie (Keith) knew how much I wanted a cutting table, but we have a lot of needs/wants so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I've looked all over at cutting tables, shows, craft stores, craigslist, custom, etc. Being 6'1" none of them quite fit the need for comfort as I have a degenerative issue with my back so cutting a lower height is painful & inaccurate for me.

Well he built this for me. It's like for I can move it around with my RA. It has storage, it was economical and it's the right height! I was so excited. Here's some pics and he was sweet enough to write up how he did it, they're all pieces from Ikea just for different things :) I LOVE it!!! I can definately cut much easier, accurately & longer :)

Here's his directions for a "jolly green giant cutting table" on a budget:

Ikea Antonius storage units:

$14.99 x 2 – Antonius Frame
Width: 17 3/8 " Depth: 21 1/4 " Height: 40 1/8 "

(There is also a 27 1/2 " tall frame for those of shorter stature)
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10177630

$20.00 x 1 – Antonius Desk top
Width: 46 7/8 " Depth: 23 5/8 " Thickness: 1 "

(To mount this desktop you have to make your own mounting holes. We did this with the screws that came with the smaller desk top and a small drill.)

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00104818
$7.00 x 2 – Antonius Desk top
Width: 17 3/8 " Depth: 21 5/8 " Thickness: 5/8 "

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60104820

(To obtain correct mounting brackets you must purchase two of these small tops or fashion them yourself.)

Total Cost = $69.98

Ikea Antonius storage bins:

$2.50 x ? – Antonius Wire basket
Width: 16 1/2 " Depth: 20 7/8 " Height: 5 7/8 "
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10177606

$7.00 x ? – Antonius Drawer 7 gal
Width: 16 1/2 " Depth: 21 5/8 " Height: 12 5/8 "
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00177602

$10.00 x ? – Antonius Drawer 13 gal
Width: 16 1/2 " Depth: 21 5/8 " Height: 12 5/8 "

Enjoy :)

What a great cutting table

damaquilts 01-08-2011 05:35 AM

I love it . I have been looking for a new one I can afford. I see there is 3 pieces to the top. I was wondering if all 3 peices show in your picture.I would like one that folds I wonder if my brother can come up with something.

ladyinpurple135 01-08-2011 06:32 AM

I just love your new cutting station! And from Ikea - what a great place - and great prices. We have one down in Charlotte - I need to make a trip and check these components out - the baskets are terrific. And the cat is beautiful - can I get one at Ikea??!! (lol).

Thank you so much for all the inspiration!
Sandy in Mooresville, NC - snow may be coming in a day or so.

Thanks for the headsup. This is exactly what I have been looking for to organize a couple of walk-in closets/pantries.

Now to find a kitty assistant!

GrammaBabs 01-08-2011 07:38 AM

super job... great guy!!!
i have quilting friends that have done wonderful things with these pieces from IKEA... you can't get more reasonable pricing and everything fits each other!
the best part is being able to get small or deep bins within the same space... your choice... enjoy!
ps. i have RA.. (just diagnosed and am lucky.. in remission with drugs.. but need to learn a lot more..it's hard to tell the difference between it and the regular aches and pains...:)

Katz13203 01-08-2011 11:32 AM

Great table - lots of storage. Even enough room for a cute kitty :)

amma 01-08-2011 01:40 PM

Your sweetie did a beautiful job on this cutting table and storage center :D:D:D

penski 01-08-2011 05:31 PM

that is cool does the kitty come with !!! if so what a bargain

puzzler 01-08-2011 10:20 PM

Thanks so much. I was sure someone could build a cutting station using IKEA materials, but never had the expertise to design one. They're always looking for new ideas--perhaps they would be interested in buying this one. In Sweden, IKEA was founded on the principle of turning great designs into affordable furniture.

No ma'am. We bought the (2) $7 small pieces to get the necessary hardware to put in place the big top. The big top is suppose to be used with another set up, but he figured out it could be used this way...just needed the hardware. You might be able to find it/alternate way, but he wanted to get it done for xmas and just decided to avoid the headache!

He is in the process of figuring out how set up another full size table top as a drop leaf. It'll be the $20 plus supplies to put it on. Once he does, I'll update it. He just wasn't sure if I wanted that or not and started out simple. I'm like OF COURSE I want it silly :)

Oh I can't wait to see more pictures. I showed my brother and the one thing he said is it didn't look like it had enough room on top for me.I open my table out all the way when I am working and use it all and them some:-) Its one of the ones that can be bought in Joanns. It's flimsy though I have already had to put support brackets on it and I have only had it 3 years.lol

I don't know what happened but I did a whole reply and it disappeared.
I showed it to my brother and the one thing he said is it looked too small for me. I have a table I got from Joann's and I use the whole top and then some when I am working. The one from Joann's is flimsy though I had to put L brackets on it for support and its still wiggles.
I am looking forward to new pictures when you get the drop leaf.I really want to see how he does it.
