Building Little Houses from Scraps

1 Attachment(s)
There is a new challenge in Blog Land. A blogger in The Netherlands has started a challenge to build little three-inch house blocks from scraps. In the end, they will be sewn together to make a large quilt.

You have to scroll down and read all the posts in this link, and they are written in Dutch, then translated into English. The pattern is published along the left side bar. Her pattern in intended to be hand-sewn; however, there is also a pattern for paper-piecing. If you scroll down a few posts, you'll find it. And if you can't find it, send me a PM, and I'll send it to you. Here is the link to the challenge:

And here is my first little house. Mine is paper-pieced. I like this challenge because I'll be able to use my tiniest little scraps.

Thanks for posting this link. I love paper piecing, and like you said, you can use up a lot of small pieces. I'd like to do this, but I have a bad habit of starting something gung-ho and then loosing interest. 366 squares is a lot of squares!! If you do what she suggests-one per day it sounds more "do-able" Maybe I will.

zennia 12-27-2011 02:04 PM

I have the pattern and looking forward to using up a lot of my scraps making these. I think it is going to be a pretty big quilt.

angelanicole 12-28-2011 08:26 AM

Very nice pattern to use scraps. I can read Dutch so no problem for me. This will be a very nice quilt and easy to do.
Ty so much.

Here is the one Ive been working on. The blocks are tiny - maybe 3". Im using Kaffe Fassett scraps

It would be cool to donate these quilts to raise funds for homeless shelters and or food pantries. Thanks for the link.

Great idea! I wonder if we can get some together here on the QB?
Your little house came out very cute catrancher! Thanks for posting! Hey, did you see the funny post about cats in general chit chat? "Borrowed from the FB..."

Yes, I did see it. I sent it to my husband and asked him if I could have one of those kits for my birthday. He just laughed. (I wasn't kidding. . . hm.)

When I go to get the pattern, my computer tells me that "the link is broken and cannot be fixed." :(
Guess I can find another 3" house somewhere~~

Hm. I just tried it and it works for me. It appears to be working for the people who replied before you too. Maybe try it again? If it doesn't work, I'd be happy to send you the pattern. Just PM me and tell me if you want the paper-pieced pattern or the pattern that was published on the website (which is intended to be hand pieced).

Annaquilts 12-29-2011 11:02 AM

Fun! Thanks for posting. Your little house is adorable and makes me want to start NOW. I am thinking about doing it. I am Dutch also so it is fun for that reason too. I must say the blocks are tiny. Maybe I will make a bigger block. I am thinking something like a block a day. So I better get in gear before the new year starts. By the way I am with you on the paper piecing for a block this size.

Annaquilts 12-29-2011 11:04 AM

LOL Also a transplant? No matter where I have gone in the world I have run into Dutch people.

What an adorable little house! I printed out the patterns and am going to give this a try...I have more scraps than I care to admit to owning and live small projects! Thank you CatRancher for giving us this link! How Fun! Think I'll go make one right now! :)

Great! I'm glad you like it. Quite a few people seem to be having trouble with the link. Weird that some people, including me, can open it and others can't. I don't claim to have any understanding of such things. In any case, if anyone wants the pattern and you're having trouble, just send me a PM with your email, and I'll send it to you. Also, if you want the paper-piecing pattern, I have that too. I don't think there's a way to post it here, so I need your email.

I printed out the pattern and am going to try this also. I've never paper pieced so will have to look up how to do it. I have lots of small scraps and time though so it should be fun. Thanks for the link!

There are some excellent videos on YouTube, and I swear by the add-a-quarter ruler. You can certainly get by without it, but I think it's a big help.

Adorable little house!

Your little house is so cute! I love little patterns and I love working with scraps, so I just had to make one. I'm of Dutch descent (last name is Booy), but can't speak it, so the writing on the linked website was "Greek" to me. Anyway, here's my little house!

For those of you who enjoy making these tiny paper pieced blocks, you might consider the paper piecing swap I just posted on the board.

I'll send you PDF's I created in EQ...and please ask moderator to remove you email address from this message as it's an open door for spam et al.

I think this would be a good 'tidy up' routine. Just make a quick house or two or three or four as part of clean up. I would sew and immediately connect to the last block. It would be fun to watch it grow over time. Thank you for sharing!

phranny 10-13-2014 02:56 PM

May I ask for a copy too, please? Thanks.

This thread is a few years old now, I am wondering how the Little House quilts are progressing?
Anyone have a picture to post?

Not a completed project, but a few of my little houses--100+ completed and 20+ in stages. I have pieced mine from precut scraps, i.e. what I find in my 1 and 1 1/4" scrap bins, except for the sky. They are all shades of blue--when I had no more blues in those bins I had to resort to cutting from bigger scraps:D. Some up close and then 54 of them

rwquilts 10-14-2014 05:28 PM

So so adorable!!! :)

Ladibug 10-14-2014 06:39 PM

Exactly where is the link on the page? I can't find it.

JuneBillie 11-16-2014 01:19 AM

These are so pretty.

HouseDragon 11-16-2014 11:50 AM

The link is still "live" but the paper piecing pattern is no longer free. Sadly, her daughter got into the business and now sells it on etsy along with stamps to use instead of a pattern.

Now if I can just remember which folder I saved the paper piecing pattern in .......... :o

Be sure to scroll down to see the kazillions of finished houses on the left side of the link and the quilts from the exhibition in the center.

grapesky 11-17-2014 05:47 AM

Hi. If you can find the paper piecing pattern would you mind sending it to me? [email protected]
Thanks!!!!!

grandmasieg 11-17-2014 09:22 AM

http://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2...two-years.html This is a cute pattern for tiny houses.
