Like fabric, I love buttons. The antique and collectible ones I threaded on poster board, cut to slide in a plastic page protector. I have the huge metal buttons that were on my great grandmother's wedding dress back in the 1880's. The common buttons are in bluish glass canning jars.

I love buttons! My mom and I were just talking about this...they seem like a connection with the past and they're small to store. I don't have any antique ones but I'd love to see pictures of yours.

Yes, I love buttons!... Thanks for the links!...

My dad just gave me a box of buttons he found in the attic that belonged to his mother and grandmother. Dad is 82 so I know they are old. Thanks for the links. I will have fun looking at them.
|
I also love buttons. Decorating my sewing room is 3 - 2 quart jars; one for old, one for recent < 30 yrs and one of just weird, old, odd shaped buttons!
|
I really like your maple leaf table topper. Is that pattern available somewhere on-line?

I love buttons!
I have some that I do more crafty things with. And I have some older/vintage buttons that I use in more special ways. I love to "play" with my buttons, feeling their texture, coldness, listen to their noise as they hit upon each other, looking at the different designs...each button is so unique...there are so many different ones, they are something that is usable, but beautiful at the same time. I don't buy them as much as I used to, but still add some to my collection on occasion. Some of my favorites are pearl buttons, bakelite buttons, vegetable ivory buttons, bone buttons, metal picture buttons and so many more. |
I love buttons too!

There used to be a thrift shop near where I worked one year. They had a rack of clothing items (that had been around a while, I guess) for 75 to 99 cents. It was fun to browse through them and find interesting buttons, and I filled metal tins with my "treasures" -- a lifetime supply!

Here is a good one??
My friend has the pearl buttons her MIL got from her surgery!!!OMG!!! I've NEVER heard of that before.... Thought I would throw it out there.... |
Nice to see so many that also like buttons. I really should take some pictures when I have them out. DH's grandmother had some all sorted out in little paper envelopes. When I saw the calico buttons I thought up putting them on poster board. I used a large eye needle and dental floss to secure them. I gridded out squares and marked with a Sharpie. If they have a shank, I used an awl to punch a hole in the poster board to poke the shank through. I really didn't want the designs to get scratched and I wanted to see them too, so the page protectors seemed like a good idea.
I am no expert by any means, just an interested collector.

You can use Marcia's site and just put sashing in between the leaves. |
I have lots of old buttons, and lots of buttons still on the cards...been collecting a long time...Love them just sitting in jars in sewing room and all the cards with buttons are in a small trunk..

Can't have enough!!!

Thanks for the links. I love buttons and enjoyed looking at them all.

Thanks for the links.
I love buttons also. Buttons have so many uses - educational - when my children had to learn their colors, to sort by shapes, to count by fives, tens, to 'add' to a hundred (all with supervision) I used buttons. So many children crafts involved buttons. I can remember my childhood home having tin cans and old jars with buttons. When my parents died, in their will they had that my neice was to receive the buttons. We treasure buttons. I have been looking for buttons all summer to fill a round globe type jar - looks like I will be looking again next summer as even fall is quickly ending. So I am not sure if others appreciate buttons any more. |
Does anybody know how to tell if your buttons are bakelite? I have LOTS of buttons and know some of them are bakelite but not sure which ones.

thanks for the links!! yes I am looking for the vintage buttons.
While we are on the subject, have any of you priced buttons lately? I sure did and was really surprised the prices of them!! |
I can't say that I have priced them recently. Guess I'm glad for both my fabric stash and my button "collection", that's my story....haha

I love buttons too. Years ago I went to an auction where they were selling a women's button collection. I had no idea that such buttons even existed. They were little works of art. I have been hooked ever since. I also have some great books about buttons and some of them are price guides as well... out of date now, but still interesting! I still can't walk by a jar of buttons without buying them if the price is right! Years ago I used to make pins out of buttons and I traded some of the really big collectible buttons that I had for smaller ones that I could use... thinking back... I shouldn't have done that!! Oh well...
|
I love/adore buttons. As a child I remember threading them on strings with my sister and having so much fun.

I love old buttons, have many of my grandmothers. I bought a small table lamp made from an old Mason canning jar at the San Diego quilt show several years ago. It has a clip on shade made from some old 30's fabric. I put the old buttons in the jar, really look cute !
|
I bet that is a cute look. I shall keep my eyes open for one of those lamps.
