I have made many of these and getting ready to do a few more so I thought I'd share this link..they are so easy and fast...I used the slats from mini blinds instead of boning...could use the metal tape measure also

wvdek 08-01-2010 05:06 PM

Thanks.

sosewcrazy 08-01-2010 06:22 PM

Thanks for the post. I've been wanting to make one for both my car and for sewing and thread scraps. Someone also told me to use the plastic strips that are wrapped around cases of paper instead of the boning.

Judie 08-01-2010 07:41 PM

I used the strapping tape that came around a box.. It's tough, works very well, and it's FREE!! I thought the mini blind idea was a good one also.. These bags work great! Great idea.

MeMeX8 08-02-2010 08:39 AM

Thanks for the tutorial! What a great idea, cant wait to try it.

ljptexas 08-02-2010 11:13 AM

This is such a neat IDEA. The moment I saw it, I said that's what I need, so I have to try to make 1 for myself & my kids. My van gets so messy. What with 5 or more grandkids riding with me sometimes.

I printed out pages of instructions & can't wait to get started!!

Thanks so much.

Thank you for the site. What is boning, and how much does it cost ? God bless. Penny

MeMeX8 08-04-2010 06:33 AM

Boning is used to stiffen the bodice of dresses. Like in the period costumes of 1800's. I used it several years ago when I made bridesmaid dresses. You sew a casing then insert the boning to hold the dress stiff and hold its shape. It is plactic strips in a cloth casing. At the time I used it, it was very inexpensive, dont know about now. It was sold by the yard. Good luck.

I don't use the boning either. I use the "plastic" strapping that is found on pallets of freight. ( they use to be all metal but now you find a lot of plastic) best part of that is, it's free. I'm a guy and a truck driver so, you can imagine how much of this stuff I see every day.

patricej 08-07-2010 03:55 AM

i'm glad i stumbled upon this before i threw away my worn out mini-blinds and all those curtain samples a friend gave me! :-)

say! wouldn't they also make great scrap catchers?

QweenBee 08-08-2010 03:53 AM

Thanks Sue!!

finch 08-11-2010 04:04 PM

Now using the slats from a window blind is a fantastic idea!!!! I like that idea better than the measuring tape.Thank you for that great idea.

Did you interfacing in your bag? Do you think the fussible fleece pellon 987 is heavy enough for this? I don't have any upholstery fabric to make it.

I just used a medium wieght drapery fabric..if you used cotton quilting fabric you could just line it with muslin maybe...
I thnk it is a neat gift for a GUY..they are so hard to make things for too

I am going to make my husband one and a few other guys. I already had that in mind. Yes I was going to use the cotton fabric. When you made yours with the drapery fabric did you line it?

No I didn't line it..I just zig zagged the edges on the inside seams

I was getting ready to make more of these and thought many might be interested who did not see this before

randigirl25 05-12-2011 03:55 AM

I made this a few months ago and really love the pattern. Its quick and easy and they really do make great gifts. I actually took an idea from a differant pattern and used a plastic shopping bag to line the inside. I just cut the plastic bag out the same size as the pattern pieces and sewed them both at the same time. This way my kids can dump anything in it and its washable!
