I am pretty sure that is one quilt pattern I can pass on - no, not to another person, just pass on as in not do - EVER!

I am a descendant of the McCoy side, and had never heard of a coffin quilt. This is interesting and I will plan on purchasing the book. :)

Wow, learn something new everyday. A friend of ours video taped his daughter's funeral. On the one year "anniversity" of her death, he invited us over for a memorial and to watch the video. We declined. Geez, a quilt, I wonder how it was stored or used or just to record family?

i, too have read the book and yes it was a way to keep record and also an honored tradition. Did you also know people sometimes do "rubbings" of head stones to quilt into quilts? I could not do that!

Wow, that's very interesting. I, too, wish I had got more from my grandparents history before they passed on. Do you know where the quilt is now?[/quote] The quilt and all of her antiques were left to her middle daughter, who recently passed away. I would think that my cousin now has all of Grannys' belongings. Hopefully I will get the chance to see them again when she and I can manage to visit. I just wish as a youngster I had taken more of an interest than I did. |

Hi Perry, my Mom was also from Pike County Ky. She was a 'Damron' from Marrowbone Creek. And she often told us of the Hatfield and McCoy fued. But never knew of the Coffin Quilt until my Dads' Mom had showed us one and explained it. Funny how I had not thought about any of this in ages. Thank you for starting this topic Stefanib123. |
