If you use longer paper then you need to use wider also. If you only use longer paper the points do not come out real pointy. The ends are more squarish. So you can do it if you don't care about pointy stars. :D

Fantastic .....

QuiltinLee 05-04-2008 11:14 AM

Neat :D

it says, as long as the paper is in the same proportions, it will work..so, if you double the numbers i.e. : 17x20 and do the same folds it will work!
char.

I remember when I was teaching the 2nd grade over 45 years ago my class was reading a story about Betsy Ross and the first flag and it mentioned how she took a piece of material and cut the star. I sent my kids home with an assignment to see if they could figure out how she did it. The kids all asked their parents and I had all kinds of phone calls on how it do it. None of the kids came back with the answer, so I showed them and they were all excited to go home and show their parents that they knew how to make the star. I ran into one of the kids about 20 years later and she told me she has had more fun showing off how to cut the star.

Anything you do with paper you can do with material. Sometimes it works best if the material is stiffly starched for the flolds.

Hi Donnarae and All:
Well, I tried the paper folding star and got a skinny-mini star WITH pointy points but it was very, very, very skinny....I think I didn't get the "angle" right when I made my cut. I will try again. This was a fun activity to try. Thanks for sharing it.

LOL, yeah I think you should try again, LOL..... I did okay and better with practice. But am wondering if can include it with sewing. Apparently Martha showed this to show it would not be hard to put stars in the flag. Well okay but then how did she sew them. I have not tried yet, but that is next with my already long list to do. :D

I wonder if you could use a fusible on the back of the fabric you are using then when you cut the star you could fuse it to a larger square then applique around it like we do with Dresden Plate blades. I think I'll practice somemore to get more "weight" on my stars and give this a try. I love applique and it looks like the star has some promise if I can get it a bit heftier.

Yeah I am sure you could use fusible applique for the stars, but question, what do you think Martha used? LOL Maybe she knew something back then that we don't? She is the one that showed them how to do the star, what else did she have in her book of tricks which she must have kept up her sleeves. Interesting.........
