I think I'll check this out too but looking at the directions, when she's sewing the applique is the stitches going through the template and if so how would you carve that out like she shows....just was wondering.

For simple shapes like this, I'd rather use the fusible method. Cut circles of fabric and single-sided fusible web. Sew together with right side of fabric to fusible side of web using 1/4" seam. Cut slit in fusible web and turn the circle right side out. Use some type of tool to press and smooth around the circle. Fuse circle to background fabric and stitch
