I really like the serpentine. Looks good and it's easy. I've also used the three stitch zig zag.

plainpat 03-30-2013 03:57 PM

Thanks for the site. Will have to try it.

everbtrue 03-30-2013 05:21 PM

My guild calls that 'Charlotte's stitch' as she was the first we knew of to use it to quilt a quilt!

Tartan 03-30-2013 06:31 PM

I prefer my Bernina # 4 instead of SITD. The serpentine stitch solves the problem of staying right in the ditch.

sparkys_mom 03-31-2013 04:32 AM

I just finished a quilt with the serpentine stitch. It is the second time I've done that and I really like it. As Tartan pointed out, it solves the problem of staying in the ditch - I wasn't doing SITD, but it does cover a certain amount of 'wandering' off the straight and narrow. :) Besides, it is a pretty stitch.

i've got the serpentine on my inexpensive walmart Brother. the first time i tried it, it pulled the fabric up too much. i'm sure, when i have time, i can play with the tensions to get it to work right.

it also holds the seam allowances when pressed to one side.

Like sparkys_mom, I just finished a quilt using this exact same stitch also! I guess there are a whole bunch of us who are really "on trend" and don't know it....LOL.

nana2madmax 03-31-2013 07:46 AM

This looks like a great stitch to use on my smaller projects like placemats. Wonder if I can effectrively use it on my longarm? Hummm....the possibilities.

CAS49OR 03-31-2013 09:59 AM

Thanks for sharing this, it looks more "quilted" than SITD but I can still measure straight lines!

solstice3 03-31-2013 10:37 AM

thanks bunches. going to try it

MartiMorga 03-31-2013 10:41 AM

Great stitch and looks easy, thanks for the link!

Loretta 03-31-2013 11:06 AM

Those look really great. Thanks.

DogHouseMom 03-31-2013 11:06 AM

Thanks for the link ... I went and looked at my Janome 6600 and I have it too ... stitch #26 I had to adjust the tension just a tad. I think the tricky part is getting it to match when placing them side by side.

sparkys_mom 03-31-2013 11:12 AM

Although I just finished a quilt with this stitch I remembered I had posted one last year that used it. I haven't photographed the most recent one yet, but here is the first one I did. The second photo shows the quilting the best.

I have used it but found it unforgiving. It changed shape when I hit speed bumps!

Great look when it works though.

I love this board! Yet another good tip I never would have thought of!

Material Witness 03-31-2013 04:21 PM

I'm glad that I have this stitch -- didn't know how you could alter it. Looks great!

Elfi2 03-31-2013 04:44 PM

Carol THANKS!!! This was an answer to my prayers!!! I've been "procrastrinating" over this quilt that I want to finish as it's been a UFO much too long.... the last bits....some seams that I didn't want to make straight, what fancy pattern (haven't got many on my machine) to use, etc. etc.... NOW it's done.... with this idea :) It's not quite as wavy as in this example, it still show the point of the zigzag but it's looks good to me. Will keep it in mind as I'm not a freehand quilter, too frightened to even start, a few waves is OK and otherwise it's all in the ditch or next to it or just plain straight accross. I suppose we all have our own gifts, not everybody is good at everything - it would be too boring!!! :)
Thanks again!!!! Elfi

Thank you for posting this tip and links to view how it is done. I love filling up my quilted brain with more ideas.

Wintersewer 04-01-2013 06:29 AM

I have been quilting sitd using that stitch for YEARS!! Nothing new to me!

MadP 04-01-2013 07:06 AM

I have done that several times. I like it because imperfections show up less.

mjhaess 04-01-2013 07:15 AM

That is great...I have a Bernina.....Thanks...

Jackie R 04-01-2013 05:48 PM

I have used the serpetine stitch on my Baby Lock. Used it on a baby quilt and it looked great. After seeing this though, I'll be using it more often because it really does look good.

jeanharville 04-01-2013 07:46 PM

Thanks for posting this technique; I had not seen it before. I got up and checked out my Pfaff Expression 4.0 and it has a beautiful serpentine stitch #74. I will certainly give this one a try. I love this board.

I have this stitch on my Walmart Brother AND can do it on my 1959 Necchi Supernova Ultra....using the 3-stitch zz cam and stretching it out. Used it on 2 Minky-backed lap quilts I just did and on a baby quilt just finished. Am so glad to see it's in fashion now cause it sure simplifies things til I learn to do more "fancy" FMQ, and looks good too! Will try to post a closeup of the baby quilt, the lap quilt pic doesn't show the stitch well.

sandrab64 04-02-2013 05:34 AM

I use this all the time putting my binding on. Looks great on both sides! Will need to try it in the quilt itself since it looks really cool.

EllieGirl 04-02-2013 03:35 PM

Can you use the serpent stitch with a walking foot?

Rosebird 04-10-2013 08:52 AM

it look so nice and pretty and yet it's so easy Quilt pattern stitches. I use a lot of that for my hand quilting. thank you for a great idea.
