Free Instructions For a Great Sewing Tote

I love the Embroidery Library. It's my first stop when I need a new machine embroidery design.

I found these instructions there for what would surely be a fantastic tote bag for quilters.

I made 2 of these for Xmas (one for me & one for my daughter in N.C.)...really fought with them while making them, but they turned out nice. I neglected to take pics of my daughter's, but here's pics of mine. Haven't used it yet, but as I have recently joined a guild here & they have classes & sit/sew days...know I will soon. Should be very handy. I even added the pocket to the front & back...always need lots of pockets!

patimint 01-13-2012 07:04 PM

That is such a neat idea. I am going to try and make one. Thanks for sharing.

craftymatt2 01-14-2012 05:14 AM

That does look like a very nice pattern and i love the fabrics you used in yours, thank you both for sharing.

SunlitenSmiles 01-14-2012 09:22 AM

like this very much! with a slightly bigger bottom (:))....and if the handle straps were continuious all the way under and back up....you could carry a featherweight in this !!!!!! of course, i do not have a featherweight yet, but if i make a case will i find one ???

Tootsie 01-14-2012 10:11 AM

That's a terrific tote! Thanks for posting.

P.S. VickiM, your tote is wonderful!

countryone77 01-14-2012 11:52 AM

Thanks, this looks like a great sewing tote.

Do be careful of the "printable version" (PDF) file, as it is missing the elastic's width. I'll let them know about that.

countryone77 01-14-2012 11:54 AM

This is lovely -- now I'll absolutely have to make one for myself.

Your front & back pocket additions are great :-).

Suse 01-14-2012 12:15 PM

Thanks for sharing.

Pam S 01-14-2012 12:20 PM

Thanks, Patrice. I think I'll try to make one. Thanks, Vicki for sharing your pics. Like your pocket idea and love your fabric choice.

Would you mind telling us what kind of fabric you used for the tote?
Thanks!

Bev, I just used heavier-feeling cotton...seemed to work really well & feels sturdy. I also used pellon decobond for interfacing, works really well in any & all purses I make, so should hold up well with this. I usually make my purses able to be washed, so should be able to do the same with this if I need to. I just smooth out & air dry & they look like new again. Hoping this will be the same. You could also use home dec fabric for this tote as long as it's not really heavy. I also made a fabric covered insert for the inside bottom (actually cut up an old cutting mat) & I do recommend anyone making anything like this to make one. I almost always make it for my purses & totes too. Just like the stability.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Do you know whether Pellon Decobond is lighter in weight than Timex or Peltex, which were mentioned in the pattern? I've not used any of these.

romanojg 01-15-2012 06:37 AM

I've downloaded these instructions but haven't made the bag yet. It's on my to do list. Did you make it; if so was it easy?

RuthEm 01-15-2012 07:26 AM

Thanks for the link........I'll send it to our daughter and give her a hint for my birthday!!

manycorners 01-15-2012 08:12 AM

Thanks for the link and alternate ideas to make this bag. Have a question though. Since I'm not a big fan of open top bags, how easy would it be to add a flap? Thanks

I'm sorry, but I have only used the decobond, so I don't know.

Yes, it would be pretty easy to add a flap.

QuiltnLady1 01-15-2012 07:40 PM

Great -- thanks.

PatriceJ-2 01-17-2012 02:26 AM

i've been searching for a good pattern at a reasonable price.

"free" is about as reasonable as a person could hope, i'd say. LOL
